nordic heat with extension box

Hi,been on here a lot haven't ever posted. need some help. bought this last summer,2003 heat with a Teague 800 carb motor. 509 cu, 10-71.It has teague xr upper, standard lower, 12" ext box., X dim is 20" or close, center of trim sender to bottom, 4" prop depth, has 1 " spacer in it, Should I take spacer out and try it? , what does the ext box help or do to prop depth, x dim? , don't see to many running the ext box. Running p5x, would the p5 be a better choice considering ext box? Thanks

what is the current GPS speed and RPM?

how does it ride? does it chine walk at all?

snowboy 04-17-2014 11:31 AM

I'm not to far from ya, i'm in MT, 72- 75, 5400-5500,26 p5x, seems slow for power, very stable, no chine walk, I'm at 3000' ft alt tho

whoa, that does seem low for 800hp, you should be seeing 90+. so either the hp numbers are off or that box is messing you all up.

Dallas has a box on his w/ 800hp. He had 1.5" spacer too. he removed it, put on 2" imco shortie w/ 1.36 gears and runs 28p bravo1 @ 90+

have you tried a stock bravo1 4bl prop yet? that's what i run on mine. i have teague platinum xr (-0 std length imco lower) w/ 1" spacer and 1.5 gears. 600-650 hp, 82 GPS top speed

the one advantage of the box is you can run shortie drive and it still gets on plane okay since the prop is deep w/ the box.

where did you buy the boat? maybe elevation and that carb is killing ur power?

I would give Bob at Full Thottle Marine a call. He is running an extension on his Heat with around the same power. I am sure he can get you in the right direction. I agree, very low on the MPHs with that much power. My 500EFI stock with a stock 26P Bravo 1 will run 72-73. Hopefully he can help you out.

k, thanks for input, sounds like my prop is way to deep?, ya I'm probably under 700hp at this altitude,3000'ft, boat came from sea level with 1.36 gears, I put 1.50"s in it and changed pulleys on blower to get boost up a little,I will give Bob a call

nedpoole 04-17-2014 03:52 PM

i bet ur running pretty fat too w/ the altitude... do you have an 02 bung in ur exhaust?

snowboy 04-17-2014 04:20 PM

no 02, ya maybe a little rich, plugs looked pretty good.no starting or fouling trouble

<<k, thanks for input, sounds like my prop is way to deep?>>

I found that the 1.5 spacer with the box wasn't the right spot on my 28 with box. Chine walked above low 80's. Removing the spacer, and going another -2 shorter with shorty lower didn't result in any crazy speed increase. it DID however help with handling.

My slip numbers are pretty high at lower speeds (in the 20's), but at WOT I'm at about 18% slip with 1.36 and 28P.

I've tried all the drive depths and all the props, I'm pretty happy with my set up.

Good luck, I would look into that 3000' tune with the carb.

Bob ran some numbers for me, he had some dyno sheets on a Teague 800, at 3000 ft alt I am losing 17%+ horsepower due to elev and heat. Down to 600-650hp at prop .That's quite a bit, so I am not that far off speed wise, should be 76 mph. Switching to a 8.3 L Whipple and Nickerson just did my carbs so will see what happens. Might try taking spacer out after I run new blower, since its always been in there and im curious

8.3L?? Whoa. That's quite the jump!
Just a heads up if u aren't familiar w the spacers. Since the spacer kit replaces the stock studs and coupler, You'll need to get a set of std length studs and std length coupler if u want to remove it.

John Teague talked me into it, said I might see 50-100 hp gain , better idle cause it has a bypass and they don't build much heat at all compared to roots.I know now after a good run you cant lay your hand on blower. It is direct replacement, for bds 10-71, I use my snout and drive pulleys. Found several guys back to back dynos that gained 120+. they were on bigger inch motors but We will see !

might want to add an IMCO SCX drive to ur teague shopping cart too... anything over 800 is asking a lot from an XR based drive.

It will be interesting to see what kind of difference the Whipple will make. My 98 Heat none step bottom with 865 hp (dynoed at sea level) would run 83-84 at 3600 feet and 86-88 at Havasu which is 450 feet so the 72-75 seems a little slow. Have you checked the compression and done a leak down test on the engine?

snowboy 04-23-2014 10:24 AM

No I haven't, compression, leakdown is on list to do soon
