Unhappy Single ram steering takes two hands

Recently purchased 06 Heat with 525 and XR drive. Steering is two hand tough and was told that it has been. cable runs smooth after pin is removed. testing with out the single ram this weekend. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I do not have the cash or availability to do a full system swap to hydraulic so looking for options or possible corrective measures

Sounds like there might be air in the lines, i had single ram add on system on my rage and it was as smooth than the factory steering ram, be careful running without the ram on tho, you will have zero power steering and it's gonna be a bear to control at speed

Is your set up, full hydraulic with a hydraulic helm or do you have a cable running back to the engine?

cable. But cable is easy to move once the pin is unhooked.

For safety's sake would strongly advise not to run it without the ram attached, 525hp behind a 28' boat with nothing holding the drive straight but a human just sounds bad in every scense of the word, try bleeding the system first, remove the power steering cap, start up boat with muffs on, very slowly turn the drive to full lock starboard, then to full lock port, checking level as you do this, do this a half dozen times or so, also you can check the external ram for leaks as you do this, just my .02

Is the steering tough at all speeds or just at low rpm while docking? If so this is typical with your set up.

It gets a bit easier at speed. But not very much.

The ram that you are talking about. Is it in the bilge, inside the boat or is it external on the transom?

That doesn't sound good. Please get a mechanic that is familiar with hydraulic steering systems look at it.
