How's your Nordic?
Hello all, I am looking at trading my 99' 271 Formula for a 35 Nordic Flame. Read through a variety of the threads. So let me make this simple, how is everyone's Nordics, honest feedback from owners only!
Any information on speed, ride, etc would be appreciated also. I will either get the HP500's or 496 Mag HO's. |
Hopefully rv will chime in here, he has a 2002 35 Flame w/496HOs that does 78-79 with stock props. I've been on it. He boats in Lake Michigan. I have a 2001 28 Heat w/496HO.
|
I have a 35 flame and I love it, it has the 500's running close to 90 still working on it. The ride is nice.
|
As Indy indicated ours has 496HO's and those speeds are the best I have seen. From others that I have talked to the 500efi's will get you 88-90.
It takes the waves pretty good on Lake Michigan. Its entry is not as sharp as Sonic, Active Thunder or Cig but it does ok for us. It seems to handle very good to me and I have not expierenced any issues that way. Are you looking at an existing one or planning on ordering. If so, who are you talking with? Rick |
Probably a year from getting it, but I am slow to act when spending that kind of money, do a lot of research. There is a dealer here is the St. Louis area that sells them. I have seen them at the boat show, read good things about them in the mags. Still need to go for the test ride.
I am wanting to step up to twins and the mid thirties in length, don't like Fountains, can't afford the Formula (plus it is too slow), Cig's are too slow, friend already has a Sunstation (can't have the same boat), really like the look of the Nordic. |

I boat on Kentucky Lake, big lake, occasional rough water from winds (2-3 foot short chop) but most of the rough stuff is from other boats

I have an 01 flame and love it. I Have had a few things ive had to deal with on it though. I did the comps on performance and $$$, wanted a 35 fastech, but the extra dough I went nordic. My wife liked the 8' 6" width of the cockpit/cabin instead of 8' 3" formula and 8' fountain. Funny how those few inches make the differance from a womans perspective. The nordic will rattle a little in rough water at speed. They make an effort to keep it light with thin glass in the dash and cabin area and thats why its a performer on 500 power. If you can, get the 500 efi power. I got 88 mph with 80 gallons and three people on glass/rippled water, lab 32 props, gps. I have 150 hours and oil consumption is minimal and reliability is great. As far as looks, we get a load of em. good luck!

hey 35flame, what issues have you had to deal with, anything major. I have the hp500efi in the 271, really love the power and sound. But the metalic blue paint can be expensive to maintain and repair, read through some of last years Formula and Tech threads to hear about my HP500efi troubles, missed two months of boating and $5k out of wallet before it was all done. All on a motor with only 250 hours on it.
In single engined boats the 500 does not make the speed difference it seems to in the twin engined boats. My 271 with the 500 is about 3-5mph faster than the 496HOmag or the older 502mag. It really amazes me when poeple talk about a 10mph difference with the twins. thanks to everyone who has replied, now all I need is the money, jgot the wife a new 2003 Mustang Cobra and a new house on the lake, the boat will wait another year or so. Should give me plenty of time to look at some used ones, a great way to tell how they hold up. |
35Flame,
Regarding your rattles, do you have a refig? If so, the rattle maybe the basket inside the refrig. We placed a towel between the bottom of the basket and the refrig and that helped alot. Rick |
Other than the folded down bimini which doesn't count,
our only rattle is the panel on the passenger side of the dash. If I had the time I'm sure I could cure it, I've never even asked Nordic to try to. It's just not that big of a deal. I kinda didn't care after I rode in a couple of other noted brands of performance boats and noticed that they had rattles too. We're on our 3rd season, over 250 hours, and quite happy with the boat. By the way, I've quit posting and participating in message boards so don't tell anyone you saw me post here. Pesky Varmint P.S. Look for our boat in the Catalina Ski Race |
Jerry,
That panel you are referring to is fastened with silicon. I was told with care you can remove it and re-fasten it. I believe the rattle you hear is between the panel and the side piece. As a test take a piece of paper fold it and slide it between the panel and the side piece. If it stops you can cure it by removing the panel and when you replace it add a little silicon between the panel and the side piece. Problem solved. I had Nordic leave ours out as I had other plans but changed my mind. Before I mounted the panel I would just lay it in there and hold it with tape and it rattle against the side. When I glued it in with silicon I made sure there was a little on that side and it doesn't rattle. Rick |
Hey Pesky...long time no post...don't be a stranger here :D
Boatinbill...you're right on the single engine 500s. In my 28 it's not that much faster, maybe 2 mph, but a whole lot of $$ for that 2mph. Better engine than the 496HO, but for my purposes, it works well. If I were to do it over again, I'd go to a 540 and bypass the 500. |
Indy What kinds of speeds are you see with the 496HO in the Heat? Thanks
|
Hey, where you guys been? The Shockwave guys are trying to take over my site..help!!
I have a 28' Heat and love it. You will love the 35' Flame. Been inside yet, even better. RVW's is one of the best I have seen. Good luck in your quest. there are a few Nordic people over on the RRX board too, if you care to visit. Chris http://www.riverracerx.com  |
nitro/max...67.something - GPS. I've been messing around with different prop combinations. I put on a 26 lab and ran 65.5 the other day (the only day it hasn't rained in this stupid part of the country  ) I had a stock 24 re-pitched to a 25 and labbed and I'll let you know those speeds this weekend. The 67 was with a stock 24. The boat will be for sale soon if anybody is interested.

INDY, How much are you looking to get for your Heat? How many hours? E-mail me if you want. [email protected]
|
Nitro...it might be sold already  The strange thing is that I never formally listed it. Word gets around quick I guess. I'll let you know if the deal doesn't go through.
All I can say is :( :( :( :( :( What a crappy summer this is going to be :( |
Hey boatinbill, sorry so long to respond, busy workin & boatin. I added to a post " Nordic quality" some time ago if your interested. Hey rv, thanks for the tip on the refer, removed the basket for a trial and it helped. Maybe its just the harshness of Tahoes 2 to 4 foot whitecaps, really sharp and close together. Was in a 37 outerlimits the other day and the dash rattled some in it to. My overhead fiberglass in the cabin, Glass around the refer, and that cover over the electric door track seem to make the most noise although its hard to tell. Dont know what to do about it. Maybe Im "rattlephobic". I agree with the re fastening of the nordic panel in front of the passenger seat. Mine could use some more adhesive. Season here is in full swing, boat is on its buoy and running great. Oh yea, the drive oil in one of the lube bottles started moving up and down as it heated and cooled. Turned out to be a hairline crack in the top edge of the bottle. The cap on the bottles only let air in, not out. Bend over though, gave 69 dollars for a new bottle at my merc dealer. Be safe and happy boatin!!!

thanks for the reply 35, all boats will rattle when it gets rough, doesn't sound like anything structural.
Other than the gluing on the passenger side panel, does not seem that anyone has had any fit and finish problems show up or other build quality related problems or failures. Just got the new Powerboat mag, I assume everyone has seen it, did a review on several F2 class boats. The 35 Flame was the fastest in the lot, even beat the full on race Fontain and the Nordic was stock and tested in fresh water at 1200 ft while the Fountain was tested in salt water at sea level. That should have given the Fountain a couple of MPH advantage at least. |
No problem 35,
I will have to check the plastic cover on the door track. I didn't notice that rattle but now that you bring it up.... Rick |
