Hope my dock survives...

I was out checking the ice today. It was moving from east to west at about 1 mph. It was more like 2" of slush. it was breaking up pretty good in Bolton. No damage that I saw

Warm and little wind today helped. Warm and sunny again tomorrow should help but more wind. Keeping my fingers crossed.

What do you guys mean by "damage"? From the winter when it freezes over????

otis311 04-28-2008 06:47 AM

Bill, We get ice on our lake. Ive seen it over 30" in spots. In the spring the ice melts and breaks away from shore. The winds then push the iceburgs around and hits docks and causes MAJOR damage

Here is my dock several years back. Post #1 is how it normally looks....The ice is relentless. You hope it gets thin/weak enough before it starts to move.

The great lakes were formed by Glaciers..... :p

Here in the tidal waters of NJ when we get a good freeze and the ice breaks up you get ice flows that will move with the current and rip apart anything in its way, sometimes literally "sheering" anything off in its way..

When I was working at the marina we had bubble systems but in addition to that we had to go out on the ice with an axe and break up the ice around the pilings, otherwise the ice would freeze around the piling and litterally rip it out of the water when the tide would rise! :hitfan:

A square mile of 6 inch ice weighs about 850 million pounds. When that starts to move at 1-2 mph on a windy day lots of things get wrecked.
