Here Is What He Hit

Airpacker 08-23-2010 12:53 PM

he hit a lighted green marker? Wow.

You know that thing is on the gps . All I can say is my gps has never showed me going around the buoy the wrong way. At night must have been more to it. Sad , very sad.

From what I have been hearing Alcohol combined with ZERO visibility was a major contributing factor . From my 30 + years of boating 99 % boaters consume some form of alcohol , not saying they are all drunk , but one or two drinks , just an observation.

You know it doesn't matter if you can see the fricking lighted buoy, can you see an unlighted jon boat with two poachers on-board? that was what cured me of running at night.

Missed them by less than 10 feet.

Very nerve racking when I think how many times Ive run at night. Usually run fast enough to get on plane and thats it.....with my eyes PEELED! Very sad. Boating is supposed to be a joy, not a tragedy....... R.I.P.

I was on the CT river at 2 am a few weeks ago. It was so dark out there I could see a sail boat that was 30 FT off my bow.

Obviously I was at steerage speed but it was the darkest night I have ever seen on the water no moonlight nothing and until I hit something with the spotlight I couldnt see it at all even an all white boat.

even at a low speed hitting one of those would do some real damage. If you were expecting it to be lighted and it wasnt that could be the cause?

Either way you have to feel very bad that someone lost their life.

RIP

To the family, we are all thinking of you.

Never assume that the lights work, have a few around me that the lights are out on them, the CG has been notified about it too.

I think we all feel bad about the lose of life and you guys that go out at night WATCH OUT for barges a old friend use to go out a lot or come home a lot at night so he put on a radar set up and it saved his life. they were coming back at night in the channels and his radar pick up a hugh object which ended up being a barge that was pushed he said you couldn't see the lights until it went by. he runs 30 at night well use to. so if he did not have the radar his gps would have directed him into the on coming barge:eek:. I like to boat during the day and party at night myself to easy to get killed out there. RIP to the family and you night riders ott to think about radar if you boat a lot at night.

Air time Ill add to that barge story because I think it can help people.

When I was a kid we had a boat at cedar Island marina in clinton CT.
There was a family with a little girl there my age.
Her family and another with a little girl went out to block Island and came back at night. They hit the houser cable and it flipped the boat, it ws then run over by a barge. All died!

I never go in front of a barge day or night.

I beileve it take 1 mile to turn or stop a barge in motion so they couldnt stop or turn if you lost an engine if they wanted to.

Barges scare the F out of me on the water! many times when they run ove r a boat they dont even know they did it.
