NH Trailer Registration w/o title

Hey guys, looking at buying my first boat, and I have a question. I have done some research but still not sure if I have really gotten a straight answer. Will I need a title for the trailer I buy in order to register it in NH? Thanks for the help.

The state rules say that you need a title. But how old is the trailer? The older stuff can be registered using a bill of sale. My 89 Shoreline galvanized roller trailer had no discernible VI#. I was able to get it registered using a police inspection form in my city of Nashua. Policeman looked it over, inspected my bill of sale and issued a sticker that substitutes for the vehicle identification info.

Register it in Maine. No title needed for trailers that weigh less than 2000 lbs. -You do not have to be a resident of Maine to register here.

I did that with a car once..... Maine plates, but had my address in CT. Nice little work-around.

But you'll have to pay sales tax!

You can even do everything via us mail to save a car ride. Stabb agency does all the running and mails plates to you.

This is what I had to do for my trailer in CT. Seems the laws in CT and NH are the same.

Thanks guys, trailer is a '95, so I don't think it's old enough to be exempt from a title. The seller also says he could possibly apply for a title in MA, but it would take a few weeks?

Seems like the best bet may be to just register in Maine!

I just went through the same thing last spring. Bought the boat from NH with an 89 Shorlander trailer which was without a title and then tried to register it here in CT. Law says that when a trailer is over 15years old and under 5,000 lbs you do not need a title to register it. I needed a legitimate State of CT Bill of sale available on line or at an DMV branch, appropriate identification, and was made to get a VIN number verification whcih consisted of a fat guy in a shirt and tie looking at the sticker that NH had applied in place of theactual VIN on the trailer to verify that it ws the number I said it was on my reg papers and then he called it good. i got a helluva run-around from DMV but eventually got it sorted out...

NH Law is 15 years, so this 1995 trailer can be registered in NH on a Bill of Sale, you'll need to get a NH VIN Verification form filled out, available online and a local cop or NH St safety Inspection station can fill it out .. If there is no VIN visible, the state will supply a decal for you and assign a number.
