SECU Roadblock : MD, DC, VA
Need some help or knowledge or suggestions. So I am in the middle of purchasing a boat that is in Houston, TX. I have approval from SECU (State Employees Credit Union) based in Maryland. They are now telling me that to purchase a boat it has to be from a dealer or private party in MD, WV, VA, DC, DE, or PA. They say it’s a requirement being a State Credit Union. Anyone ever heard of this? I know they can make up their own rules but wow.
Thinking maybe I can have the Houston dealer work with a dealer or private party in one of the approved states to do a sale and then sale to me. Oh and the boat has to be titled in one of those states prior to my purchase also. Again any suggestions, ideas, recommendations or know of anyone than can do such a transaction would be most helpful. Thanks |
DE is your best option. No sales tax. I would have them work a deal with a marina/dealer there so you cDNA finalize a deal. Just a thought

You have to pay sales tax in the state you register it in(if your state charges sales tax). It doesn't matter where you buy it from.

Yes he has to pay in TX but if it's "sold" to some one in the listed states you must pay tax to gets title. Why pay tax 2x.

It can be transferred tax free to a MD dealer and then he will only pay MD tax. And DE is fine if you don't plan to keep the boat in a marina, but MD water cops cruise the marinas looking for DE boats, if it's there more than 6 months, gotcha. And they will not just charge the tax, but penalties and interest. Never get between the state of MD and some tax money :)

He only needs an avenue to get back to Texas. He doesn't want to keep it in in the Mid East
