I know it is late in the season but you should also check out Seneca Lake, We had a few of us there on the north end (Geneva) boaters beach last weekend.
Also we (ROPA) run the Seneca Lake Battleship (poker type) Run on Seneca the 3rd Sat, in July every year. Why not check us out next year! (www.rochesteroffshore.org- sorry for the self promotion!)

Nice lake. But everyone on the lake hates performance boats. Like kelly o says, unless it's a woody people will have a problem. It's super boring lake personally.. Takes about 15 mins to cruise from one end to the other. Few places for food. Much better performance boat lakes. But yes the lake as a lake is beautiful.

Its the same douche bag crowd that started all the noise testing in a-bay. Unless you are in a bay liner or pontoon I would avoid it. Like Phil said it would be a half hour ride anyway. How much harassment do you get on canandaigua? Heard from a few guys the ramp on afternoons is crazy

Canandaigua is great, I've never heard of anyone having issues with noise. There is a speed limit of 45, but that's not really a big deal. I haven't spent much time on Seneca, but I would say Canandaigua is my favorite of the finger lakes, but maybe that's because I'm only 5 minutes from the launch. Kershaw is nice for swimming and you can go over by squaw island if you want shallower water. The launch can get crowded depending on when you get there. In the morning between 11:00-12:00 on the weekends it can get backed up and the same happens around 6:00 in the evening when everyone is leaving. There is plenty of parking though so if you're patient its not bad. If I had my choice, I'd probably choose Sodus Bay as the best place for boating in the area though.

Grew up in Oswego and played hockey in Skaneateles. +1 on what the other guys are saying. Lots of people that look down on anything that makes noise. if your looking to hit the finger lakes definitely recommend Cayuga or Seneca.

Don't forget about Oneida lake, it's a bit further but has plenty of room for most every boat as it's the largest lake completely in NY. It's almost completely sand and always has a lot of boats at sylvan beach and 3mile bay north of Frenchman island. Chicken wing fun run in September also has a nice crowd and its for charity.
