Chain-O-Lakes
FYI for you guys. I have a copy of the petition if someone wants to pass one around, just give me your email. They want to outlaw boat bigger than 26 feet and impose a 40mph speedlimit.
Hello, You may have heard about the proposed boating laws and the fierce debates surrounding the topic. This is a result of the boating accident that killed a young boy on the Chain of Lakes last summer. The boy's aunt is State Senator Julie Morrison. Her husband and sister-in-law (boy's mother) are attorneys at the law firm of Morrison & Morrison. The family was on a rental pontoon. The other boater who hit the boy was convicted of intoxicated driving and sentenced to 10 years in prison in June 2013. It is a terrible tragedy for all involved. In addition to the proposed legislation below, Senator Morrison is working to restrict size limits of boats and motors, and further restrict speed limits. I hate to say it but we as a club need to get involved in this debate. Attached is a petition circulating on the Chain. I propose we inform our club members and sponsors about the topic, the petition and start collecting signatures. This will affect us all. Inland Harbor has agreed to be the collection contact for executed petitions. They can be sent to Marie at: INLAND HARBOR MARINA. 38816 N Broadway Ave, Antioch, IL. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __ PUBLIC HEARING ON BOATING SAFETY LEGISLATION TO BE HELD AUGUST 29TH. MCHENRY, IL - State Senator Pamela Althoff (R-McHenry) is encouraging local residents interested in Watercraft Safety to attend a public hearing scheduled for August 29th to obtain input on three boating safety measures sponsored by State Senator Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield). The meeting, to be held at the Lake County Central Permit Facility in Libertyville, will discuss the proposals then give opponents and proponents the opportunity to testify and share their opinions. The three measures - Senate Bills 1477, 1478, and 1805 - were assigned to the Special Committee on Watercraft Safety in the Senate. Senate Bill 1477 would suspend the driver's license for three months of any person who is found to have operated a watercraft under the influence. Senate Bill 1478 would prohibit anyone born on or after January 1, 1990 from operating a watercraft without a valid Boating Safety Certificate issued by the Department of Natural Resources. Lastly, Senate Bill 1805 would require operators of a watercraft towing a person or persons to display a red or orange flag on their watercraft. Althoff, who is a member on the Special Committee, is urging those with a vested interest either for or against the proposals to attend the meeting and voice their opinions. Althoff said, "IF ANYONE WISHES TO TESTIFY FOR OR AGAINST THE THREE LEGISLATIVE MEASURE, THEY MUST CALL SENATOR MORRISON'S DISTRICT OFFICE AT (847)945-5200 TO BE PLACED ON A LIST OF SPEAKERS AT THE MEETING. Additionally, Althoff said ther is the potential for this to be the first in a series of similar public hearings on these legislative proposals. For more information, call Sen. Althoff's district office at (815)455-6330. Boating Safety Legislation Public Hearing Thursday, August 29th 1:00pm to 3:00pm located at 500 W Winchester Libertyville Campus • • • • • • |
I was out last sunday on the Chain. I will never go out again without bringing my hand held video camera and my Go-Pro mounted up front. As we were idling thru the Grass lake south end no wake zone, a guy jumped into the water to pee I guess. The pontoon he was on was still going forward as he jumped. The driver did put it in neutral but it coasted about 50 ft more. After he did whatever, he started to swim to the pontoon, but was having a difficult time. Then someone on the toon told the driver to start backing up !!!! The driver did and almost chopped the guy up. This was a RENTAL PONTOON !!!!
After we passed those goofs, my friend spotted another RENTAL pontoon heading south thru the no wake pulling a tube with 2 kids on it !!! IN A NO WAKE ZONE !!!!!And again as we were headed from Petite into Fox lk, another RENTAL pontoon in the no wake was going about 5-6 mph making a good sized wake. I hollered at the guy and he looked back, smiled and waved !!!! Really !! And then as we were going home thru Nippersink lake towards Rt 12, a Jet Ski cut across in front of me and was only 25-30 ft in front of me as I was travelling 40 mph. And guess what ?? It was A RENTAL JET SKI !!!! Can't wait for this sunday. I am going to be out all day filming these idiots and putting my videos out there for everyone to see, including the Morrison's. We are all very saddened by the loss of any child, but why do we have to be punished for what the rental drivers are doing !!!! Oh and I believe the parents of that young boy were driving A RENTAL !!!! We know what the problem is--why are we not addressing it !!!! Smitty |
river shiver is the only reason to go to that piss pool . nothing but people that dont give a chit about nothing .. people jump all over youre property . drive like there mario andretti .. i think they have done it to themselves over there . now all to pay the price ..

Typical Illinois logic. Punish all for the action of a dumb a**. I'll still never forget the time I took a trip through downtown Chicago. The water taxi's make 4 foot wake's and I make a 1 foot wake and the law is jumping all over me. Illinois politicians really hate boaters. Apparently boaters aren't corrupt enough.
Really would be a shame if they imposed this bullsh** but it wouldn't surprise me either. Sad |
Just to let you know the speed limit being discussed would be state wide, not just on the chain.

Bye Bye for the cash the state rakes in!! I'll bet average boat on chain is 28 feet a lot of those marina's would close not to mention how much money is lost from that chain sticker?? As for a 40 mph speed limit how much of that would cover lake Michigan?? Don't forget to tell all the fisherman with bass boats that do 80 or 90 speed limit is 40!! Basically all of this is a bunch of BS I understand somebody lost a life and were all sorry for that know one wants to see that happen!! Fact is if it were a car accident on a Major Highway would they reduce speed or say no suv's or sportscars that do over 65 no they wouldn't!! Again our thoughts and prayers go out to the family I'm just saying we need to rethink this whole thing!!

Speed limit on highways just got uped to 70, so the logic of going slower on the water doesnt make sense. As for boat size, the reason I have a big power boat is because everyone had a 25' or bigger on the local river and I got beat to death in my Jetboat. As far as the boy that was killed, that boat was travelling below the proposed 40mph speed limit at the time of the accident.

THIS IS THE FIRST COMMENT AFTER THE ARTICLE FROM THE LINK ABOVE VERY INTERESTING!! All this from a family with members that have been recently arrested and charged with DUI of a motor vehicle and 2 counts of felony possession of cannabis with intent to distribute. Nice family the Borcia's are... Also they are connected to the senator Julie Morrison whose family is defending the charged Borcia's as well as going after the FWA, rental agency , and the sherrif's department.. If your project is so just why do you have so many charges against individuals in your family, Borica's? What is it you stand for again?
