Destin / Fort Walton Beach – 11/6/06 The World Capitals of offshore powerboat racing are Destin and Fort Walton Beach in the Florida Panhandle. Registration for the Merrick World Cup Classic, the United Worlds of OSS, OPA, and POPRA, is drawing long lines. The Dry Pits on both sides of US 98 in Fort Walton Beach in front of the Emerald Coast Convention Center are filling up fast with boats from OPA, OSS and all the way from the POPRA West Coast. Many teams are still on the road, but officials are expecting between 70 and 80 boats, with roughly equal numbers from the OSS and the OPA & POPRA side.

“This is a huge turn-out,” said veteran racer Bob Teague who himself celebrates his 30th Worlds in Destin. “With 70-80 boats, this is the biggest Worlds in OSS history and the biggest Offshore Worlds in recent history.” Destin brings back memories of Worlds with close to 100 boats.
