What A Race In Svl!!!!!!!
Kevin Cooper in SVL won today with a great race strategy. He was the only boat to complete the course using his GPS and not coming to close to the turn boats after 2 turn markers broke loose. After being lapped, he still won first place. Great job Kevin !!!!!!!!!

Apparently, two turn buoys were dislodged, and it is alledged that Typhoon and Team Progressive/Wild Card came dangerously close to the turn boats. thus being penalized one lap and finishing points. Lavey craft (running the experimental NXT drive) was lapped by most of the fleet and will receive first place, if the penalties remain. a decision will be made tommorrow. |
So what penalties are currently being assessed upon IMCO and Wild Ride ? Didn't Typhoon lap the Laveycraft?
|
From what I understand, Imco and Wild Ride did not receive any penalties.
Typhoon and Progressive/Wild Card did lap Lavey Craft. Imco pulled off before the race finished. Wild Ride was having mech. problems. |
Wow. That sucks big! Sounded like one heck of a race.
|
still unofficial
Laveycraft 109 Wild ride 100 penalty for missed turn and guadian issues Typhoon 96 penalty missed turn and endangering turn boat Imco 90 mechanical problems Wild Card 89 penalty missed turn and endangering turn boat Typhoon/Wild Card and Wild Ride all lapped Laveycraft so the question remains on how to score based on penalties. Results to be finalized today. Great tight racing upfront with three lead changes, that is why spec racing is so much fun WOT and set up wins. |

Caution lap?
Since I've never been out to install a turn buoy, I don't know the time that it takes to properly position it. But why wouldn't they run a caution lap or two to acquire and reposition the buoy(s)? I think the start of one of the LOTO races was delayed because of the same reason.
A restart would lead to a more exciting race and the results wouldn't be tainted by boats navigating a turn whose pivot point is left to their best judgement of what 100 feet past the turn boat is. If there's no buoy and you're racing side by side, how do you choose your line if you're on the outside? The course should always be clearly defined. In road racing, it's a great way to pass by pressuring the inside lane to brake more by confining his space. I haven't raced a boat (yet), but it seems like the same would hold true. I'm sorry if there is an obvious point that I missed, but a dislodged buoy is a disappointing way to ruin a great race. |
if a turn buoy lets loose, we are supposed to race where it would have been. Not where it is going. The turn boat is anchored several yard inside the buoy and we should use it as a reference point. the question here is, how close did the racers come to the turn boat? I guess the turn boat needs to answer that question. and did they really create a unsafe situation? that will be decided today.

Hey Guys,
Congrats on some great racing. If I may offer an opinion here. it is probably safer and better to yellow flag the race and reset the wondering bouy. One race we were in, the bouy was hit and deflated, leaving it anyones guess as to were it went. It can get pretty confusing as a mix of different class boats hit the turn at the same time. Pictures look awesome, Thanks, Louie |
Brad and Kevin figured it out and ran the appropriate circuit. Thus I am not sure that anything should have been done differently. The boats all have GPS, they all have the turn coordinates and shoudl abide by them.
Unless the buoy was gone when they arrived on the parade lap, they knew where it was. I figure they were racing for the lead and were doing anything they could to either protect or improve their position. When coming up to the corner in question I would not doubt that they got close to the turn boat, it is only natural. They let the heat of the moment dictate their actions and broke a rule of engagement, thus the penalty is just. The promoter cannot control every aspect of the race circuit and the drivers have to use their judgement when things do not go as planned. Personally I think it is great to see a santioning body step to the plate and give out penalties for what they deem an unsafe situation. That is the way it should be, sucks for the three guys who were racing for the lead and doing everything they could to get an advantage, I completely understand why they would have done what they did. But in the end, if their actions while racing put others (especially non-racing event participants) as risk, there should be a penalty. With all of that stated, I am sure the view from the corner boat and the view from the racing boats were very different, thus I would expect quite a bit of controversy regarding this decision (if it stands). On the other hand, it appears Team LaveyCraft is well off the pace and unless they can turn that around ASAP, it would most likely not effect the final outcome significantly. Rick |
Randy won't have a problem with it. He has stated for years that the strict rules enforcement is what he likes about OSS.:)

Youre right, Randy doesnt have a problem with it, he is just glad to compete with several other boats vice by himself. |
I know the rules in both SBI and APBA were that at any time no race boat can come closer then 50 yards to any stationary boat either a start/finish or turn bouy....I don't know if OSS's rules are the same...but I would think it would be along the same lines....

Just call me GPS
When Kevin and I ran the first parade lap I picked fixed points to navigate the course. The missing turn 4 bouy was the water tower at the east end of town. There was no GPS needed.

Brad,
Either way, good work. Much more impressive than running by GPS. Good luck today! Rick |
Looking forward to the re-match today

Good luck guys, great racing and be safe. Louie

What a great time we had. Hard racing with some of the best teams out there in my opinion. I want to thank Mike Tomlinson for doing the right call and following the rule book that is available to all OSS racers. His is a job that not many want. These are the reasons we all enjoy racing in OSS. Rules are rules and we must all follow them to the letter. Its not for everyone but it sure is for Typhoon.
