Merc.racing Saves The Day

Thanks Bill Harris,Steve and all the guys from the Merc. Racing truck!!! My lack of last min. checks on my boat cost me the worlds. Of all things my battery went out on us in the 3rd lap and disabled us. The Motor 525 ran great all day. There was some talk on this board about the motor and some passable problems. There were none that I have to report.

Boat runs faster when it's chillier ... we know.

Go get 'em, Mad Dog.

CigDaze 11-14-2003 01:10 PM

That's great, Randy! Good to hear.

So, where did all the other info come from?????????

THEJOKER 11-15-2003 10:30 AM

Randy:

Glad it was a simple solution to get going. Peconic first you post on OSO that the black beauty delaminates and now the motor has major problems. Give Randy a break - BH

Brian,

Peconic was accurate. I don't think he was bagging on Team Typhoon at all or the manufacturer. We all know they are great guys. Guardian mode has caused problems for them as he stated. Word around the pits were cam sensor problems and oil pressure sensor problems that some had run into.

Their 525 does seem to have issues. We were very glad to see Team Typhoon come out for the second race. We saw the Mercury guys working on their boat to get it ready for Saturday. Unfortunately a cooling problem got the engine so hot, something in the engine compartment caught fire we were told. Apparently Guardian mode didn't catch it??? Randy and Glen can really run the boat. Engine gremlins didn't help them this week.

Your correct. Let's Play and Donzi Super V were smoken. All three lost their coolant and then poof. Your also correct about the aluminum heads. No telling what damage lies beneath. CRE will have to open them up and check for damage if the teams want them to or possibly some other repair facility...then they will have to be resealed. Not a good week for the 525. The water was brutal.

Question....What kind of engine failure causes fire?

Flashwave 11-17-2003 03:46 PM

We were told the coolant leaked out and the engine got so hot the hoses caught fire. Did they really flame? Who knows. Did it smoke, melt and produce black soot. Yes. You can see the smoke in the picture above. The 525 has a closed cooling system.

Lets try to stop all the rumors. The water hose came off of the oil cooler under the motor. All the water that cools the headers didn't get there. The crossover hoses burnt off because of the exhaust temp.,causing the fire.

TYPHOON 11-18-2003 07:16 PM

Rapidcat is correct! We didn't tighten the hose clamp tight enough. It was fine on the garden hose but with the water pressure when running it blew off. Just another lesson learned by us. The fire was the cross over hoses on the headers. We towed in and replaced the hoses in the pits and ran the motor.Everything was fine and just needed a good cleaning.
Keep your eyes open for the Merc 525 in our new SVL next year. I have the utmost confidence in the 525 and feel it is the motor of choice for us.
