POWERBOAT P1 ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER CELEBRATES 2007 WORLD CHAMPIONS

The Powerboat P1 World Championship Annual Awards Dinner took place recently at the Landmark Hotel, Marylebone, in London’s West End, attended by more than 200 guests from across the globe. Powerboat P1's Managing Director, Jim O'Toole, welcomed teams and guests and outlined plans for the 2008 season, including an exciting mix of new and established venues spanning three continents.

With TV color commentator and Master of Ceremonies, Tiff Needell, the elegant 4-course dinner was peppered with witty remarks on the season’s events. The most moving moment of the evening was the presentation of the new “Spirit of P1” trophy, awarded in memory of deceased pilot Sergio Carpentieri. The first recipient of this prestigious award was Peter Cox, Race Course Official, for his heroic actions following the accident in Germany when Sergio lost his life. The award, which notes unselfish actions which strengthen the camaraderie of P1, was accompanied by a full minute’s emotional applause.

Another first-time trophy was the “Host City of the Year “award, recognizing warmth, enthusiasm, infrastructure and organizational skills that contributed to staging a world class event. The trophy was given to Portimao, Portugal, which will host the September 26-28, 2008 Grand Prix of the Sea.

The “P1 Moment of the Year” award, noting a “pure adrenaline” experience, was given to Sun Lik Beer. Though the team hung tentatively on a precarious wake during the Belgian Grand Prix of the Sea, they recovered and finished the event safely and in one piece.

The Chaudron “Racing Project” Team swept the SuperSport Class awards after a hard-fought and fiercely competitive season; The King of Shaves Fountain team likewise reaped its share of honors in the Evolution Class for 5 wins in their debut season.
