Default Coan Engineering "Powershift XMT" Transmission

If you've not seen Coan Engineering's "Powershift XMT" 2-speed marine transmission in person or in action, this weekend's Shootout at Lake of the Ozark's is your best opportunity. Lightning Performance Group will feature a "Powershift XMT" at their impressive new display trailer, and for the second straight year, J.D. Onken will be competing in the shootout with his 32' Skater outfitted with a pair of these unique 2-speed transmissions. The 2-speed design offers several distinct advantages when compared to single speed transmissions. In most installations, boats may be propped for higher top speed without sacrificing the ability to quickly reach plane. This is achieved by accelerating in low gear, utilizing the 80% increase in torque through the transmission, and then shifting at full throttle to high gear for top speed. Low gear is also very useful when maneuvering boats in harbors. The gear reduction slows prop and boat speed to assist in docking. Coan Engineering offers a 18” model of the "Powershift XMT" to retrofit to existing dual cooler bellhousings currently using Borg Warner style (Bam or Huber) transmissions . A shorter 16” version utilizing a Lightning Performance non cooler style bellhousing is also available for new installations. Stop by and see for yourself. Visit with J.D. or Don Onken as well as Keith Eickert who provided inspiration for the project.

Coan Engineering has specialized in high performance automotive drivetrain development since 1976 and is very excited about the opportunity to offer the marine industry a product it’s needed for a long time. Located in Kokomo Indiana, Coan Engineering features state of the art, in-house, CNC manufacturing and 3D CAD designing.
