Default MYSTIC Powerboats - Miss Geico Wins NYC Offshore Grand Prix

New York, New York, September 16, 2009 ... The MYSTIC vs. MYSTIC battle continues as Miss Geico won the New York City Offshore Grand Prix race around Ellis Island, NY. (www.superboat.com) Marc Granet, driver of Miss Geico, says today’s victory wasn’t without surprises and engine trouble. “While, the water here looks flat, there were some big rollers out there and we took some hops and leaps…He continues, “There was one roller I bet was 6 feet, it just came out of nowhere.”

At the race start, the 50’ carbon fiber / epoxy MYSTIC Aqua-Mania cat hull earned its reputation. “It was like we were shot out of a canon” describes Aqua-Mania Throttleman Rick Merola, “It was intense and we want to respect our competition.” Interesting conditions plagued the race course and even though the course looked smooth, it was filled with water that no one expected especially as the GPS clocked straight away speeds of 170+ MPH.

As Aqua-Mania took what looked like a race long lead. The boat went wide on a turn in lap 2 and the Miss Geico MYSTIC dove through the rough water to the inside and overtook. “It was no looking back” explained John Cosker, who was observing from the air. “Even though often Aqua-Mania had a few close opportunities to regain their early race lead, Miss Geico held them off.”

Further, Mark Granet quoted, “Scotty Begovich (Miss Geico Throttleman) and I been fortunate to be able to test and race some of the finest offshore powerboats made. John Cosker’s Mystic is truly in a category of its own. The sheer beauty combined with a high speed pedigree of the top teams in Offshore racing is alluring in itself. However, most astonishing is the almost athletic ability to run at extreme speeds over the roughest of courses.”

The battle between Miss Geico and Aqua-mania in New York moves to North Carolina and will be decided at Clearwater, Florida on October 4 and will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Spectacular Television Series beginning October 2009 . Producer John Potts, of American Powerboat Television (www.AmericanPowerboat.tv) states, "This is the kind of extreme action that elevates recognition of the sport of offshore racing and builds audience base. Covering the close battles between these two boats at 200+ mph will make for GREAT television..."

Currently Miss Geico trails Aqua-mania in the SBI national standings. Cosker continued, "This could become interesting, since the SBI Nationals in Clearwater is a double points race, Miss Geico could win the national championship. Aqua-Mania sits on the current national point’s lead of 2402 and Miss Geico is at 1952. The 450 point lead can be eclipsed by Miss Geico either if Aqua-Mania fails to start either of the next two races…even though that's not likely… in Turbine powered Cat racing, anything is possible. “

The top three point’s leaders in the SBI Turbine Class are MYSTIC's. MYSTIC Powerboats has been at the top of the inshore and offshore speed categories all year. In SBI, MYSTIC Powerboats are untouchable in the top class: Turbine Extreme. At the premiere Bonneville style speed race, the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, the Nauti-Marine Dave Scott and Johnny Tomlinson piloted 50’ piston powered, carbon fiber, epoxy MYSTIC surpassed the next competitor by nearly 20 MPH roaring to a 196 MPH run in the measured mile…both Johnny and Dave stated “there was so much more in that boat.” At the Sunny Isles, Florida, race besides dominating the race itself, the Aqua-Mania MYSTIC 50 foot Catamaran set a NEW World Record leaving US waters, circling Bimini in the British controlled Bahamas’ and back to the US in 43 minutes and 43 seconds. This record is the fastest that any water vessel has ever gone to a British controlled territory and returned the United States in the history of speed record keeping.
