Default Team amsoil offshore crashes in ocean city maryland

Team AMSOIL Offshore spent the winter rebuilding the 368 Skater after a grueling yet successful 2011 season that ended with an overall win in the nasty waters of Orange Beach, Alabama. Once the boat was completed, it made a stop at the Lake Havasu Boat Show and Desert Storm Events in Lake Havasu, Arizona and then on to Las Vegas to be on display at the AMA Monster Energy Supercross Finals Pit Party.

The boat and rigs departed from Las Vegas and made the 3,000 mile trip to Ocean City, Maryland for the first AMSOIL OPA Series Race.

The team gathered at the site and prepared the boat for the first race of the year. Saturday testing provided needed information for set ups that could be adjusted for the forecasted higher winds and seas that were predicted for Sunday’s race.

The wind was blowing early on Sunday and the intensity was building as the day went on. Team AMSOIL Offshore was scheduled to run in the final main event of the day. By that time, the seas had become quite rough with constant 6 foot waves with occasional 8 to 10 footers.

Team AMSOIL was assigned lane number 2 with PhoenixParts.com on the inside and Team Infinity on the outside. When the green flag dropped, Team AMSOIL and PhoenixParts.com locked horns in a fiercely close battle that continued for the first 3 to 4 laps of the 12 lap event.

Eventually, Bob Teague and Paul Whittier were able to take the lead and began pulling away slightly as the race continued.

While in the overall lead, Team AMSOIL approached Turn 1 as three very large waves rolled past. Team AMSOIL launched off the first wave and then caught the transom on the second, resulting in a severe bow down attitude. The Team AMSOIL boat then “stuffed” into the third wave at about a 60 degree angle and disappeared completely into the Atlantic Ocean.

The boat came to an abrupt stop under the water then reversed and exited backwards ending up right side up. The port deck hatch in front of Bob was ripped off allowing the port sponson to flood. Bob and Paul were able to keep the boat afloat and get it to the crane and back on the trailer without further damage.

The 368 Skater safety systems all worked as designed. The canopy maintained its integrity and Bob and Paul were protected from the 100 MPH blast of water. In fact, Bob and Paul did not even get wet. The accident did cause some stress to the deck. Early Monday morning, Bob jumped into the hauler and took the boat 800 miles back to Douglas Marine (Skater) in Douglas, Michigan for repairs. The boat will be in perfect condition for the next race in East Tawas, Michigan on June 24th.

Team AMSOIL was awarded 3rd Place for the race which puts a little more pressure on the Team to achieve another high points championship.

We are proud to announce that AMSOIL is returning sponsor for the 2012 AMSOIL Offshore Powerboat Series sanctioned by OPA Racing.
