Default Shakespeare Marine Joins Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 24, 2018

Partnership Aims to Give Boaters Peace of Mind Through Functioning Radios

SOUTHOLD, N.Y. – To ensure boaters everywhere have functioning VHF radios on-board, Shakespeare – a leading global manufacturer of both civilian and military maritime antennas – has announced it is partnering with Sea Tow Services International to support the company’s popular Automated Radio Check service.

Already established as world leaders in marine antenna design, engineering and manufacturing, Shakespeare will help sponsor, fund and support the program, which allows boaters to check that their VHF radios are functioning properly without clogging emergency channels.

“A working VHF radio is one of the most important things to have on a boat,” said Bill Eastwood, business manager at Shakespeare Marine Electronics. “With our role in the marine communications industry, it just made perfect sense that we support Sea Tow’s program and we’re proud to be involved and support this important effort.”

Thanks to partners like Shakespeare and emergency beacon manufacturer ACR Electronics, which also supports the service, Sea Tow is able to provide the Automated Radio Check program as a free public service to boating communities nationwide. The program helps to reduce the volume of non-urgent communications traffic on VHF channel 16 -- the international hailing and distress channel -- while still allowing boaters to ensure their radios are functioning properly.

Sea Tow and Shakespeare urge boaters to regularly check the functionality of their radios by following these instructions:
  1. Tune the boat’s radio to the proper channel for the community -- Automated Radio Check Service uses one of VHF Channels 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 or 84
  2. Conduct a standard radio check.
  3. Upon releasing the mic, the system will replay the transmission, letting the captain hear how they sound.
Boaters can visit https://www.seatow.com/ARC to find the designated Automated Radio Check channel in their area.

“We are proud to have a partner like Shakespeare to support this critical service,” said Joseph Frohnhoefer, III, chief executive officer of Sea Tow. “A company with the brand recognition of Shakespeare’s, globally recognized in our industry for its marine antennas and equipment, is a good partner to have as a supporter of a program that allows boaters to ensure their VHF radios work correctly. They will provide exclusive training webinars for our members. It’s a true win-win.”
