Speedboat crashes onto OCMD beach
The (Salisbury, Md.) Daily Times

OCEAN CITY, Md. — A speedboat taking part in the offshore powerboat races Sunday in Ocean City veered off course and slammed onto the beach in the area of 17th Street.

No one was injured in the incident that happened at around 3 p.m., police said.

Police said the 42-foot Wicked was severely damaged and stuck on the beach.

They said a crane called in to remove the boat got stuck in the sand, so a second crane was called in.

The boat was, however, reported to be still on the beach late Sunday night.

It's a good thing that Wicked boat is being lifted out of beach but bad thing is that right side of hull is damaged...Hopefully, team can repair and prepare in time for next race....:-\

Another great example of accurate reporting by our media! :rolleyes: I thought it was brought to shore due to damage caused while on the course....Guess the idea of a powerboat slamming into a public beach is more interesting than the truth...

No kidding. I can't help but to think of the news last week when the Coast Guard petitioned the Ocean City City Council to locate the course another 300 yards away from the beach. Not sure what came of that discussion, there was talk that there would be a compromise. It seemed a little further than last year, not much though.

Here's another (Actually it looks like the same story!);

Speedboat veers off course in Sunday races in Ocean City and hit the beach

One of the speedboats in Sunday’s boat races in Ocean City went off course around 3pm at 17th Street and got stuck on the beach. The 42 foot racing boat – “Wicked” was severely damaged, but there were no injuries in the incident. A crane was brought in to remove the boat – the crane got stuck on the beach at 31st Street and another crane was called for to remove the boat.
I submitted pictures of the hull damage during the race to show it had to be beached to avoid sinking. They used the pictures as the pic of the day :)

Unfortunately, by the time the boat got pulled, high tide had already taken its toll on the boat. If it had been pulled earlier, the boat would not have flooded. Now it needs a complete re-rig.
