Crash Kills Two Offshore Racers in New York
Two offshore racers died Sunday when their catamaran overturned during an Offshore Performance Association (OPA) race during the Miss Geico Triple Crown in Patchogue, N.Y., authorities said.

Kevin Graff of Port Washington, N.Y., and Phil DeJana of Bayville, N.Y., were taken to a local hospital where they were both pronounced dead, according to officials. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of the deaths.

The incident occurred around 4:30 pm, south of the course’s Shorefront Park where many spectators had gathered to watch the race. Piloting a 37-foot twin-engine catamaran, the boat was traveling in excess of 90 mph when it overturned on a southeastern turn of the racecourse. An official cause of the crash has not been determined.

Jim Poplin, the safety director for the race, told the newspaper (ITALICIZE-Newsday) Newsday the cause of the crash is being investigated by OPA as well as local police. Poplin explained that the boat will be taken apart and reconstructed in order to determine where any failure may have occurred. He suspects that the crash was due to the high rate of speed, the newspaper reported.

Close to 5,000 spectators lined the shores to watch the full day of racing and another estimated 500 watched from their own boats. The event at which the race occurred, The Battle of the Bay, was the second in a series of races called the Miss Geico Triple Crown. The final race of the series is slated for Sept. 5-7 in Point Pleasant, N.J.

God bless them and their families,,, there were at least 30,000 people there, at least 5,000 where the ambulances were, rescue teams did a great job getting them out of there in a timely fashion. Our prayers go out to all involved, especially the famlies and loved ones. They will truly be missed.
