Joker Powerboats/CRC 611 Race Report:
Solomons Island, MD
The Joker Powerboats/CRC 611 team scored a podium result with their third place finish at the final race of the Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) regular season. Entering the weekend with no mathematical chance to win the Class 6 National Championship, the team focused on getting to the front of the field and staying there. “We missed three races while our boat was being repaired and it took us out of the running for the championship,” reported team driver, Pete Smith. “Because of that, our only goal was to get to the front, as we didn’t need to worry about points”.
When the green flag dropped, the team came out of turn one in fourth place, but quickly dispatched the third place boat and went after the top two. Unfortunately, third was as high as they would get as the first and second teams, Wazzup II and Maxed Out Motorsports were able to get out of striking distance and the Joker/CRC team settled into third at the checkered flag.
The third place adds a trophy in the case next to the first place trophy from the last race in Port Huron, MI/Sarnia, Canada. “It would have been interesting to see how the points would have shaken out if we had not missed the three races,” said Crew Chief Bud Wilson. “But, that’s racing. We certainly look at this season as a success, even though the points don’t reflect it.”
Next up for the team is the OPA Palm Beach World Offshore Championships October 17-21 in Florida. “Since the National Points Championship is over, the slate is wiped clean,” according to team throttleman, Rich Smith. “It is a two race, winner takes all event, and everyone in the class has a shot at bringing the OPA World Championship Trophy home with them.”
