37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
I am new to the forums and need some help. I am looking at buying a 37 Stilleto and have found some good boats here on OffShore Only. My question is about the different drives that these boats have. One has the #6's, one has the #5's and the other one has the Bravos w/ boxes. I have only ridden in a 37 with the Bravos w/ boxes. I have been told that the boat rides differently with each drive. Has anyone ridden in different powered 37's and can compare the drives for me. Thanks for the help.
P.S. RG3 keep up the good work....very nice. :D :D |
Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
I have ridden in a triple engine bravo, twin engine bravo and a SSM V boat. The triple engine boat has the best ride just because of the weight, next I liked the twin engine bravo boat. I did not like the ride of the SSM V boat at all. The SSM V boat had been re powered and may not have had the drives on correct, it felt like they were to high. There are some #6 owners on OSO maybe they can give you input on the 6's

Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
Thanks BBB725,
Do you know what motors were in the SSM V boat. I was told by one guy that the boat with SSM V drives rides squirrelly. Is that a good description of the ride? |
Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
I have owned a 37 with sixes and currently have one with Bravo's / Imco's, I have also ridden in a V boat.
the best ride question is tricky, what boat and what set up are you looking at. side by side engine set up or Staggered set up, mild power or big power, quad step or regular??? |
Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
Looking at 3 different boats.
1. 99 Single step 750 Cobras SSM V side by side. 2. 01 Single step 575 Bravo XR W/boxes Staggered 3. 00 Single step 900SC # 6's Staggered. I guess the whole question came from a guy that told me the boats with SSM V drives rode squirrelly. |
Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
The 01 575 w/ xrs and boxes will be most reliable.
The 00 900 w/6's your gonna add 400 lbs. to the back might need alittle more tab to keep the bow down. I don't know about the ssm V's |
Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
I agree, sounds like it will come down to your budget and how fast you want to go.
My 1999 37 is for sale if your interested |
Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
We had a 37 Quad, with 6's and 1000 KE's. The boat was never squirelly. It was a handfull over 105 mph. With 6's the drives are surfacing. The boat wants to run or cruise fast. At around 65 mph you could feel the drives get up on the surface. It didnt like to run much slower than 60-65 mph. Dont know if the single step was different. It all depends on what you want to do. Is insurance an issue? Check now, that may help push you in one direction or another. Bravo drives are cheaper initially, but you may brake a couple. Before everyone jumps down my throat, the reality is you got a 10,000 lbs. boat with big power through a bravo drive. Bravos are cheaper to fix, the 6's are bullit proof....but if you do have a transmission to worry about also. If you do have a problem with a 6 drive its alot more money than a Bravo to fix. Our 37 was one of the best rough water boats I have ever owned. It amazed me how fast it would run on flat water, and the same hull would crush 4 foot waves like nothing. It all gets back to what you intend on using the boat for. Water test them that may help make up your mind.

I owned a Bravo boat with 750 hp supercharged motors for 5 years and now have a # 6 boat with a set of quad rotor 565s. You will find the #6 boat is happiest at higher speeds in the rough stuff.

The 01 boat with 575s and bravos would be my choice nice package and the insurance will be better than the #6 boat. The boat with SSM V you have drive first, but are parts available for the Vs yet? May want to check on that. |

Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
Yea the 2000 is called Let's Rock. It is being traded in to Lake Cumberland Marine. I use my boat mainly on a large fresh water lake, Lake Lanier in Georgia. 100-104MPH is exactly where i would like to be. I would have to beef up the 575's to reach that, but it's sounding like the Bravos might be the better choice for me. Thanks for your input.

Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
I'm the current owner of the Let's Rock Boat. I am the 5th owner. Bob Russell was the first owner, then John O'Loughlin,(both multi Outerlimits owners)
then Grant gerrity (Grand Lake, who owned it for less than a year),then the guy in New Jersey I bought it from(who is currently selling the Wild Child boat). I talked with all the owners befroe me about the boat and other than Grant Gerrity they all said they loved that boat and the feeling while driving it. When I got the boat it was not maintained the way it should have been. I have spent a lot of time and money to bring this boat up to the level it deserves. The boat is almost flawless currently. It had 240 hours on the hull when i got it. I have only put 25 hrs on it. Summary of what has been done to the boat since I have had it: Port and Starboard top ends rebuilt including new Jessel Pro Shaft Rocker assemblies, Port Motor complete bottom end and Dyno (all by Gellner Engineering, Ohio), Painted Cockpit dash to match the rest of the boat (was white), Dual Flush Mount Helms, New Upholstery in Cabin, New Snap In Carpet through out, New Full Cover, One New Dry Sump 1500 HP Trans, Rerigg and all new double steering pump system, All new shifter, and indicator cables, All new MSD Ignition, New Bump Solenoid Modules (it all works like factory now), New Imco Gatlin Exhaust Silencers, Swimstep rewelded and powder coated, New Fuel Pumps, New Indicator on dash, New Marine Machine HD Tie Bar Assembly, All new steering and trim tab SS bolts, Added 1" spacer to the #6SSM drives, New Fuel Transfer pumps, Myco Trailer completly rebuilt including all new Axles, 6 disc Elect over Hyraulic brakes, controller, tires and wheels, new bunks, jacks, lights and wiring, new leaf springs and some new paint The boat is very clean and is dependable now. Starts and Idles around the docks very well, and of course does very well top end wise. This boat accelerates unbelievable between 45 and 100 Even out here on Havasu or Mead in 110 Degree weather. I have been thinking about selling and buying a 39' Quattro with 600's or 525's to lesson the amount of maintanance required, but mostly because my time is limited and don't have the kind of time this boat deserves. The one comment about this boat being run hard all the time is probably not true, it was run hard I'm sure some of the time and has seen it's share of Poker Runs but the boat was built and designed for that and is still very solid. I have had fun with this boat the two trips I have had it out this summer and as usual it brings plenty of looks and it is a blast to drive. |
Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?

Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
I bought new 17 x 33P 4 Blade Mercury's which is the same as was on there when they broke. the only difference is that the new ones aren't labbed yet. I also have tried a pair of Herrings 17 x 33P 5 blades and a pair of 17 x 37 5 blade Merury's. The Herrings are very smooth but I'm not sure thay make the boat handle as well as the 4 blade Mercury's. The 37 Pitch are a bit too much pitch for the boat. It takes a lot of testing under the same conditions to really figure out which is best and I haven't had a lot of time to do that. Everything changes when your running in 110 heat and some altitude like Lake Mead has. When I first got this boat with the 17 x 33P 4 blades in Nov. of 2004 out at Lake Mead that time of year the boat ran much faster than in the middle of summer.
I talked withGrant and I know how he felt about the boat. |
Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
What speed are you getting right now with the 17 X 33's? How well does the boat get on plane?

Re: 37 Stilleto -Which Drive?
The motors should weigh about the same the additional weight is in the drives and tranny's.
