Merc 525's or 600's ???
 

Hey all, I'm getting a 39' Quattro this Spring and I am having trouble deciding which engine's to go with, the 525's or the 600's. What is your take on this? Do you think that Mercury will get the 600's up to the stated speed and HP promised?? Or should I stick to the 525's? Thanks for your input.

What about the new Ilmor 625 hp package??

P.S. no pockets for a six drive boat

How about saving yourself the trouble in the future and pony up for the 850's and #6 now !??!??!?? :D :evilb: :cool:

The 525's are rock solid. Not many problems. But nothing beats the whine of the blower motors. Depends how long you want to kep the boat. Just a Fountain guys' .02.

Dankerst...First off, great boat. I really like the lines of the Quattro. If you are not going the 850's and 6's, the Ilmore, are 550 H.P. A little more than the 525's. I personally would stick with "Blue Motors" A.K.A. Mercury. If their is a problem, and their will be...More dealers to chose from to service the problem. Big price difference between the 525's and 600's Im sure you already noticed that. If you are trying to look at all the angles, check with your insurance carrier, ask what the difference in price would be. Underwriters write policies based on alot of variables, speed being one. For some reason when the word supercharger, blower, or turbo are used, the rates always go up, even if the boat is only 4-5 mph faster than the 525's.

dankerist, Mike Fiore took me out in the 39 at the Miami show and it had 600's. At that time he said that boat was not running any faster than w/ the 525's. He said the in/cooler p/up's were suck'in out some speed! Based on the ride and what he said, I think you would do well to stick w/ 525's. Be able ta throw a few tank fulls of gas in ta boot!! The boat just flew over 3-4's as flat as a pancake. Mike only cranked it up to a little over 80 w/ us. 5 people and a big load of fuel. Nice ride. As the Dodge truck ad sez, Sweeeet! Keep us posted on your new boat. Good luck. Wrink

I went for a ride in No Discipline at the Miami Boat Show Poker Run. That thing crushed every wave in its path and handled like a dream. The 525's really got the boat moving too.

Been looking the PBM article on the OL Quattro all day. What a sweet looking boat!! I really hope to see one in person. Congratulations on your new purchase!!

I never got any real feedback on the 625hp Ilmor package. Maybe that motor is just too new. I want an honest 100mph Bravo drive boat, and it doesn't seem as though the new 600 Mercs will get me there as they are now. Hence looking at the Ilmors.

525s are still the safest bet. We'll see.

Scot Conrad's run a 39' Quattro with Ilmor MV10-625's (albeit with #6's). Give him a call.

I'm having the same dilema picking engines. I started out wanting the Ilmors, picture below. I talked to a ton of folks about it at Miami, and every manufacturer, including mine, recommended sticking with Merc. Not only for service, but especially for resale.

So now it is between the 525s or 600s. I ran in the 382 Formula with 600s in Miami. They didn't really get much better performance than the 525s on top end. But the mid range is noticably better. And they sound better if you like the blower whine. But Merc's pricing tells me they sure are proud of them. I talked to the Merc engineer that headed up the 600 project. He feels they are far superior engines to the 525s, but we could have guessed that. Interestingly enough they do seem to idle better than the 525s, possibly helped by the lower compression. They are quieter than the 525s also. I wonder if one gets better gas performance than the other?

The Ilmor's looked great. My concern was I saw tons of 600s compared to only a couple Ilmor 625s, and those were in the Ilmor and Hustler booth.

Lots of folks will say get the 600s, but when you are paying out an extra 25-30K for 2 of them, you wonder why at times :eek:

I spoke with Scott Conrad today. He seemed like a very good guy, and was very helpful in discussing engine options ect... .

I believe he had a customer special order that boat. It is a 39 Quatro with 625hp Ilmors, and #6 drives. Owner wanted no drive problems, and plans to run the boat in the Catalina ski race. Boat has run over 98mph so far, and they think they will see over 100mph.

Thought I would bring this thread to the top again. Now that summer is half over, any of you folks that have experiences with the 600s want to comment on how you like them so far? Or the 625s?

I got a ride in a 39 the other weekend, the ride was great and very fast for 525 hp boat.
But i like big power.
Later if you are looking for more hp the new merc 600 is the easiest
to get hp. A pully change and efi tunning and you should be able to make 700hp easy and less $$$ then 850hp merc.

I took delivery in June. Pictures of the boat are on the "39 vs 42" Outerlimits thread. I ended up going with the 625 hp Ilmors.

What's your opinion on the 625 Ilmors? Would you do them again over the Merc 600's? Any problems from them?

Ilmors were good, and the boat was fast. We had some water pressure problems early on, but that was fixed by changing the lowers. The Ilmor guys were very proactive.

Ken, have you put the boat up for the year? Or are you taking it back to Az so you can run it during the winter?

The boat is in storage until May. There is an outside chance that I may run a Poker Run in Florida, but I doubt it will happen.

How is your boat coming along? Have you decided on power yet??

Molds get made later this month. We have not decided power yet, but I will either stick with 525s, ITS and sportmasters or go to 625s and Teague drives (or Imco if they are available in a package). I'm not too impressed with Merc's 600s so I dropped those out of consideration.
