New Ilmor 625hp w/Teague platinum drive

Looking for some more feedback regarding power options for a new Outerlimits 39 Quattro.

The more I hear about the new Merc 600, the less think it is worth the dough to upgrade.

What has anyone seen or heard about the new 625hp Ilmore piece???

What have people's experience been with the Teague Platinum drive???

I know they have run the above Ilmore package in a new 39 GTX and it ran sweet. Still it makes me nervous to get away from Merc.

Why would you be nervous about going away from an engine that costs $5,000 more and runs the same as a 525?

Apparently the Ilmor MV10-625 powered 39' GTX will be evaluated by PowerBoat in Sarasota very soon. The results should be interesting.

I also heard there's a lot of interest in the Ilmor 625 from some major players which should become apparent in the coming months.

525's are a proven package plus merc has been around for a long time. Service, resale ect..

Dank, the wife and I boated in Lake St. Clair for years and would vacation up in Charlevoix, MI a few times a summer until we bought a place in Char. town, unfor., not on the lake! So we spend just about every w/e up there boating in the summer. Gorgeous waters, great day trips out of Lake Charlevoix into Lake MI. If Lake MI. is rough , we can boat on Char., find a great place to throw anchor and hang! Cold waters but just fabulous. You look into the water and think it is 6 feet deep and your depth finder says 15 or 20 feet! Take care, Tracy

wrink,

yeah, i have boated a lot in Mich. I grew up there, and am back every summer. I have some great memories of what you describe.

I am in crunch time to pick power for this 39OLQ. What do you think Wrink?

p.s. Have you ever run up in the 1000 islands. Clayton, or "Alex" bay NY??

Dank., have not boated at all in the areas above. I here the 1000's are real nice. I think the 525's would be hard to beat. Proven, warrantied w/ the drives. The wine of those 600's is cool but have not been to impressive from what I have heard. Not just Mike at the show but I had a Fountain dealer tell me in some trials in a boat or two they were not running much better than the 525's in the same boat, if at all! Only my opinion. Good luck Wrink

We just recieved our 39 gtx from the factory last week and it ran 102mph with 4 people and a half tank of fuel. It's for sale in the classified section.

No blowers just updated the 550, might be turning higher RPM to get the numbers though

that was one of my favorite boats at the show. I love the cockpit layout. The silver is pretty awesome too.

If you are boating at St Clair you are right by the Ilmor factory. That would solve the service issue. :D :D

They would be tempting. Save yourself 700-800 lbs of weight too.

John,

I am leaning towards getting the 625hp Illmor motors. The guys at Illmor seem pretty willing to please, and their product is getting some positive feedback. The package in comparison to the proven 525hp Merc is quite a bit more dough, and the service/resale issues concern me.

What did you decide on for power? What was the general consensus on the 625hp Ilmor package in Miami? What kind of boat are you getting?

Thanks for the input.

Dank

I talked to the guys from Ilmor for a couple hours in Miami. I thought they would be excellent to work with. As far as the general consensus, prices, decisions etc maybe we should take this offline and talk via mail or phone. I will send you a PM.

OOOOPS, just found that you don't have PM or email enabled. Mine is, so if you send me a PM or email with your email address or phone number, I will contact you tonight and we can talk about power choices. I'd be happy to call you to talk about it. I'm in the exact position you are, and looking at the same options you are. My goal was to decide at the Miami boat show, so that is what I spent most of my time there doing. I will share my observations when we talk.

Re: New Ilmor 625hp w/Teague platinum drive

I'm not intending not to share. I spent 3 days in Miami and spent a ton of time talking to the Ilmor engineers and the Merc engineers. It is obvious what each of them think. So I talked to several manufacturers, all gofast builders, not cruisers etc. To my surprise every one of them said given everything to consider, price, performance, service and resale, the best value on the market is Merc. Now with that said, if you ask me which engine I like better, my pick would be Ilmor. Which do I think would perform better, I'd say the Ilmor 625 over the Merc 600, but that is opinion and not based on fact. I've also talked to Ilmor 550 owners that say the Ilmor is more fuel efficient. One downside with Ilmor is I wish they made their own drives and packaged them with the engine. I know they package Teague's with it, but I still wish they had their own.

My biggest concern - I put my head under hundreds of hatches in Miami. I saw one Ilmor in a Hustler. There may have been more and I just didn't see them. But on the other hand there were literally dozens, maybe even close to a hundred 600s at the show.

Should that bother you? Well. that is probably a personal thing. It will bother some folks and not others.

The latest issue of Hot Boat states that Ilmor engines were all over the La Boat Show. Maybe they placed their focus on the west coast custom scene!?!

Anybody out there that spent some time at the LA show that can talk about what kind of showing Ilmor made out there. I wouldn't doubt they did better there than Miami. I think the west coast builders may be more apt to try something new before the east coast. But then again the only reason I say that is west coast in general tries things before the midwest. It will be interesting to see if a midwest engine builder starts their market out west.

From my notes there were Ilmor engines in the following at LA:

DCB F-29 - Pair of custom painted 625's
Outerlimits 39' Quattro - Pair of 625's
Eliminator 30' Daytona - Pair of 550's
Commander 29' - Single 550
Ultra 28' Stealth - Single 550
Two 625 Show Engines
One 550 Show Engine

Did OL have any numbers of how the quattro ran with the 625s?

John,

That is a six drive boat. I talked to Scott Conrad, and he said they saw approx 99 mph. He said he thought thay would get it to 101 mph when dialed in. He was very positive on the Ilmor 625 hp.

p.s. my loser brother in law put that quote at the bottom for me...not that i don't like hot women and fast boats....

I would think the Teague/Imco drive would be a tad faster than the #6. Not as reliable though.

HEY DANK,
what power did you decide to go with in the 39 foota? You had better bring it up to lake st clair so we can go and have some fun on the water. I was doen at lake cumberland and they had a 39 with the 625 in her and it ran 111 i think. That is flyin. Cant wait to see your boat.

I heard the 625s got the nod. I also heard PB just tested a 39 with 625s and got 109.  Guess we will find out when the article comes out. That is some outstanding numbers.
