speed problem

Hey guys! I have talked to so many people and they can't figure this out. I've got a 28 pantera that will only run 60 mph. I have a 525hp carbureted 502. I am currently running a 24p B1 4 blade. Getting 4850 wot. I can only trim it about 1 or 2 seconds before it statrs to cavitate. My prop shaft is 3 1/2 inches below the hull when its all the way down, and thats with a 1 1/2" spacer. I also have a 12" extension box. I have a new Bravo X drive coming w/ hydro nose cone, and would like to put this back together the right way. I thought about leaving the spacer out, but I wonder if drive might be too high. I would appreciate any feedback!

i would think you should be running at more like 5200-5400 rpms. with that power, you should be running 73 +- what are the specs on the motor? are you sure bout the hp? a 28 with stock 500hp runs 70-72, turning a 26 B1 at 5200. somethin aint right

I know its a 502 gen 5, It came with the boat. The seller told me it was respectively around 515 to 525. I don't know much about the internals(crank, pistons ,rods etc..) but I do know that its got merlin heads (ported and polished), Wiend stealth alum intake, 850 d pumper holley 110 gph elec fuel pump set@ 7psi. Stelling headers, It has a stock distrib. but has a msd coil . I really don't know much about the motor other than that. I was told it was a 1994.

Re: speed problem

how many hours? have you done a compression test, leak down? and check your spring pressure. could be tired

Re: speed problem

I did a compression test in early July, and all cylinders registered good, and all just about the same pressure. I'm not sure how many hours are on the motor, but I know I still have good oil pressure, at cruising speed 100+ psi, if that means anything. I haven't done a leak down test, I want to, but have never done it and not quite sure how to do it. Same with the spring pressure, not quite sure how to perform the test, and what to look for.

Re: speed problem

Could this boat be the black Pantera 28 with the lime green interior and palm graphics. If so thats no 500+hp motor. Did a sea trial on it a couple of years ago.

Honestly, I really like Pantera boats a lot. Haven't come across one I didn't like yet! I talked to Jo, and this was rigged totally wrong, but not by Jo at Pantera. He knows the boat, has seen pics, and is not very happy with the way it turned out. He has been very helpful with me in some ideas. I would like to try to turn this boat into something a little more respectable, as all Pantera's are. Anybody have any info on this boat, feel free to post. Thanks!

Well,
when we went to test drive it, we got there, looked under the hood and there was red oil all over the bilge, The trim would not stay up, it lists to port under power, No trim tabs, and wires hanging all over the place.
Under wot we knew it was not doing 75

The owner has MANY parts laying around, It could have been a car engine with a few nice looking parts on the top.
The Owner ""Maker""(marine gypsy) is well known on this board (I don't wanna name names)
My suggestion is to pull the engine and find out what the deal is.
My bet would be that the engine is stock.
Also pull the prop and get it done.

Oh and get some trim tabs
