Towing a 24

Iam trying to get theboat back in the water, as it is going to be 80 this weekend. Want to get the boat to the shop and want to save on the pick up charge. What does everyone think about towing a 24 with a jeep wrangler. It is the inline 6 cyl. I think it can do it, but the tow hitch set up says 3,500 lbs. Our luanch is directly across the street from us. I would tow it about 5 miles on local roads, tops 45 MPH to get it too and from the shop. What does everyone think. I am thinking might not be a good idea too and from the shop. Not sure about taking too and from luanch though. I can see it now, pulling the tow hitch off the frame (uhual set up). would anyone even pull it around the yard/neighborhood, or should I just pay to have them do it until I get a truck.

My jagoff neighbor just took out his little rinker out. He runs it like its an offshore boat. I can hear his little 6 cyl cry for help the whole way done the cove. Poor boat. I don't think he ever runs it under full throttle. Can't wait to fly by him at half throttle. HEHEHEHE HAHAHAHAHAHA.

I would say using it to just go across the street to the ramp would be ok, but would vote against the 5 mile tow on city streets. You could have liabilty issues if something happened.

I tow mine with a 2WD Explorer Sport Trac. And so far I've towed up to 150 miles at 65-70 mph. I'm sure the Wrangler will do fine a couple of miles around town.

One thing that I would recommend to anyone with a smaller than full-size truck towing a larger boat is the Air Lift suspension assist airbags. I put them on my truck and it makes a huge difference. ;)

liability issues maybe.
contact Pat Mcpherson here on the site... you can grab his real login by looking in the superboat threads... he's all over there.
He tows his 24SB w/ BBC w/ his wrangler.
He'll tell you what can be done.

Also, my buddy towed his 1975 28 magnum w/ twin sbcs w/ a 6cyl four runner... well over 100miles... on highways...he's f'n nuts.
"no problem at all"... okey dokey dude.

I don't thin it would pull the tow hitch off the frame, if it is a regular drawtite setup. I was pulled out once in my Z71 (stuck up to the frame) by a Jeep Wrangler. He jerked that z71 so hard that his front tires came 2-3 ft off the ground. Didn't show any damage and it didn't pull the tow hitch off the frame.

Not a problem; my tow vehicle is a 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport 6cyl 5speed.
I towed my 1989 24' Pantera for 1 season and this will be my 5th season towing my 1997 24' Super.
The Jeep has plenty of power; the problem is the short wheel base so keep it under 50mph. I have brakes on all 4 trailer wheels so stopping my rig is not a problem. If your trailer does not have brakes go slow.
You'll be fine...

Like Pat said, the problem with the jeep is the short wheelbase, and small brakes, frame and drivetrain are fine, just take it slow, and you will be fine. I was going to buy a new wrangler, but voted against it to tow the Pantera, as I didnt wanna have to do 50 across alligator alley.
