How much HP and how fast
 

My boat was not winterized by the people I hired to do it. Cracked block. We were able to do roughly 70-71 at about 4800 RPMs. It was a 502 that was a crate engine that was marinized, etc. Dry exhaust. Question is about how much horse power did that engine have. We have an 89 24. The mechanic wants to put a merc 502 in it with 425 HP. Trying to get the people that screwed up to cover it. They say they will, but want insurance to. Insurance denying it, etc. Anyway, just trying to see what I should do, once I have the money, etc.

The marine merc/GM crate 502 is rated at 440 at the flywheel and with the merc efi and accessories 415 at the propshaft.

If you were doing 70-71 gps you were pretty close to a stock 502MPI. Which were rated at 415pshp as Ironman said.

Sorry to hear about your engine....But, when your ready, I have a 502 long block that I had build in July by Warren Racing in Clinton, NC. It has a 2003 500efi block, crank & rods, all standard sizes (the engine had no damage and only 79 hours on it when pulled from my 28 Pantera) Warren used Diamond racing pistons, Billit cam, Cometic gaskets. The Heads are the Mercruiser Rect. ports that came off of the same engine, I sent the heads and Merlin intakes (I had 2 engines done) to Uratchko Racing Engines in Michigan to have them ported, polished & gasket matched then rebuilt. The engines were built to make an honest 575hp on 93 octane and last forever.... (last a long time) I have over $5000 in the head work and rebuild not including the reused parts. The hull was sold while the engines were out. (Uratchko took over a year to complete instead of the 6 weeks I originally planned on) I have since bought an outboard boat. All you should need is your accesories, a carb (intake has 4150 flange) and rocker arms.

What prop and drive were you running when you ran 70-71?

Too many factors to go fast. How fast do you want to go. Each mile above 71 is going to cost you 1000.00 per mile on a motor. This is based that your bottom is straight, with the correct drive height.
