24' Race edition pics needed
Curious to see how the raceboats have been laid out in the past. Dash, interior, rigging, etc. all is welcome.
Also anyone run both 3man standup and sitdown 24's??? Curious to the pros and cons of each. Not a big fan of the old school, waist high freeboard while standing. Considering making it a sitdown with two race bolsters. |
Is the 3 man with low freeboard done for safety reasons???
|
I "converted" my seats to strictly sit-downs. I lowered the entire seats 4" and the seat bottoms another 7". So I now sit 11" lower than the original bolsters. They look a little strange with the seat bottoms that low but you are really wrapped in the seat now. It's "function over form". No way I would stand up and drive a 24.
|
That's kind of my thoughts but I know it was the way to go back in the day. Never saw them race so I'm a bit "new" school and dont see the point in standing in a boat that only comes up to my waist.
Sure as hell not hitting anything on the way out if ya hook. That is the only reason I could see running it this way. |

Could you guys take a quick measurment from the floor to the top of the freeboard? Not too familiar with these 24 and not sure if the standup race versions were built any differently than the pleasure models. Dash is obviously way different but curious if there's a drastic difference for the seat height.
|
I can when I get home. I can tell you that the top of the seat bottom from the factory was at 25".
Jo would be able to answer if they were built differently. |
By the wheel I am about 32" from the floor to the gunwale and 38" to the windscreen.
Also, I need to correct my earlier post. I lowered the seat bottoms 9", not 11". They were 25" from the floor and now they are 16". |

I have had 2 24 Pantera and if I had another I would make it a sit down for sure. I believe that it's a better feel and also you look more proportioned. Look at onesickpantera's avatar and you will see what I mean. |

Here's a pic with the new seating. http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...Torch82010.jpg |
Looks like mine floor to top of the side gunwale is 33" Appears a sit down is possible, but the angle of the dash would be way off. This might have to be a winter project to figure out whats best.
Still cant get over the odd feeling of standing in a boat thats only waist high. Feel like I'm gonna fall out even will its sitting on the trailer :lolhit: |

I love the setup I did on mine. Two sit-down race bolsters with a console in the middle. I didn't raise the floor as I put the seats on 7 1/2 inches High bracket. I can see perfect and the boat looks really slick. the console is 15 inchess high, 14 inches wide and 44 inches long. If you have any question let ms know good luck

I welcome any and all pics. Heading to the shop now to see what the heck I ended up with

If you are 6'5" and stand straight up you definetely have a problem BUT even if you lay back against the bolster its much better. pepe. PS, Remember that there were many 27' and 28' Magnums and 28' Cigarettes w/ the low freeboard. Nobody complained. Back then racing sitting down in a boat used to be a no-no! |

I used the angled bezels on the port instruments to improve the visibility and viewing angle from the drivers position .... on my 28 Cig the speedo and other instruments were on those old skool aluminum tube elbows to raise the instruments 90 degrees from the dash panel. I can post pics tonight ...

looks good, where did you get the angled rings from. think i might want some. thanks

Caution .... they are a PITA to install because you have to oblong out the holes so the instruments can angle in that direction, and recut the bracket arm on the shallow side. Lot's of hole saw & sawzall drama! |
