Ballast tank ??
 

My 24 im building has a ballast tank that I plan to use.
Whats the best way to fill it ?

I was originally thinking of T ing off my sea pump plumbing a hose within reach of me while im running the boat, and having a ball valve to open and close to let water in.
Then just a bilge pump in the ballast tank to jettison the water when needed.

A friend suggested a 2stage sea pump in fear of starving the motor for cooling water when running hard and filling the tank.

Im not sure how long this tank will take to fill via sea pump T or if using my stock sea pump is a good idea or not??

If I can avoid the cost of the 2 stage id like to.

Thoughts??? Other ideas ???

Hi scarab62 . One way to fill a ballest tank is from a s/s pickup pipe on the transom and a 3 position lever in the boat , fill /close /dump .this will be a self drain . nothing to go wrong , we sell them over hear in the uk , iam sure you can buy the kit in the states. regards paul

525 blower motor for now. Ultimately when the projects over with im going to shoot for 650.

I was going to also recommend a transom water pickup. I also remember seeing a pickup on a race boat that was hooked to the K-plane. You would just open a valve to let water in the ballast tank. Not sure how the dump valves work.

Where is your ballast tank located?

Ballast tank way up front glassed in. dont think gravity would fill it much unless the boats underway using water psi to force it.

One of the k planes has a sm hole drilled... Maybe an old pickup??

CIG92 has a velocity that fills from a trim tab. bury the tab when your running and it fills very fast. send him a pm he can give you all the details on how it fills and emptys out

That is another way of doing it as Bullet says ,water presure fills it up very fast .there is norm an over flow fitting at the side from the top of the tank for when the tank is full , just about every ski boat here in the uk has one like this .and gravaty drain which works of a three way valve .pipe size is norm 0ne inch bore. regards paul

Found it so now I can fill it using just water psi while underway.
But still thinking ill need a bilge pump to pump out.
It doesnt have a bottom / gravity drain.

just curious if you figured out a way to go with your tank. Also any of you other guys with 500+ hp adding weight to the front of your 24, ballast or lead. JAime

Nothing yet. Ill most likely be going with a sm pickup coming off the tab to fill it using psi. Bilge pump to dump.

Just curious what the final solution was/is going to be?

Would water pressure alone force water out of a bilge pump outlet, past the bilge pump once the tank filled up? Or would you need a seperate overflow? You would need a breather hose anyhow, so I suppose the breather would double as the overflow....
