What's the value of this 28?

I am considering buying this boat:
1982 28ft Pantera
2 - 454 mercs, will need a rebuild.
Bravo 1s, will need rebuild also.
SS 4blade props, K-tabs, MSD ignition, Gil Dry exhaust, fiberglass fairing.
Boat is in good condition... needs some TLC.

Could anyone make an educated guess what its worth?
I don't see many 1980's 28ft panteras on the market, why?
Most are mid to late 90's.
When taking a closer look at the boat, are there any places I should look at specifically for stress cracks and the such?

By the way, this site ROCKS! So happy to have found these forums.:p

PANTERA LOVER 07-11-2002 01:36 PM

is this boat by any chance in a place called Hampton Bays?

Stormrider 07-11-2002 02:46 PM

Wow, you guys know everything... yep, thats the one.

PANTERA LOVER 07-11-2002 02:55 PM

I am going to try and help you here but it is up to you obviousley to make the final call. Here is what i know. Before i bought my pantera i looked at that one. It caught my eye because it was so dam cheap. I payed 600$ to have a surveyor take a look at it. In the words of the surveyor "i wouldnt pay 5 dollars for it". I will give you a basic report of what was in the survey and i had pictures. The name of the boat is "Water Heater". The boat has excessive water damage to the hull. We believe that it may have been sunk at one time while doing the moisture reading test on the main hull. There were several gas and oil leaks in the main engine compartment. This boat has not been maintained. I also really thought it would be a "good deal" but let me tell you right now even if you were getting this boat for free you would be about 30 into it to make it decent. This report was done about 2 1/2 months ago. Unless someone completley re did it (which i highly doubt) my best advice to you would be KEEP LOOKING! This boat is going to be nothing but trouble for you. I would go into more detail but i honestly dont have the time. But thats what i know so i may have saved u 600$ for the survey. This boat is not cared for and the surveyor said to me i would be taking a risk to even use it in rough water, it could be dangerous.

-Best of luck to you

Now this is a good use of the board.

Stormrider 07-11-2002 03:21 PM

Not only did you save me $600 on the survey, but you saved me thousands on my divorce!;)
You are a lifesaver pantera lover....

I spoke to Jose Nunez a couple of times about used panteras...
and he has seen many a money pits. He advised looking for a real nice one and paying up front for the better boat instead of buying a disaster.(and then pouring the funds in)

I think a 28ft would be perfect for the Long Island Sound and inshore ocean use. I'll have to wait till I can save up more funds.
I'd love to get a new one, the pics from the plant get the blood flowing.

For a 28' Pantera is top of the list... due to the great looks, great quality, great lines and cause Jose and Pepe took the time to talk to me about their boats and steer me in the right direction.
And thank you again Pantera lover...
For now I'll still be missing out.

PANTERA LOVER 07-11-2002 03:40 PM

Absolutley no problem, glad to help you out and save you from one hell of a bad boat! Yes Joey and Pepe are great! I am glad you did not waste your time on a real bad boat. The 28' is great and also the 24'. They both handle & perform like champions and are built with unmatched quailty. Joey and Pepe are great people and im sure they can steer you in the right direction.

If you need any help or have questions about other used Panteras ide be glad to help.

-Good luck to you

IRONMAN 07-12-2002 12:22 AM

How much were they asking for it? sounds like a project if it is cheap enough <3000 or so. Has anyone converted twins to a single before in a 28? Ironman.

PANTERA LOVER 07-12-2002 09:23 AM

when i looked at it about 2 1/2 months ago i believe his bottom line was 16,500 and i think it stands at that right now.

Stormrider 07-12-2002 09:35 AM

Yea, he is asking 16,995.
See www.hamptonwatercraft.com
But does anyone know why I don't see many 80's 28ft for sale?

PANTERA LOVER 07-12-2002 09:38 AM

really couldnt tell you, but i know what you mean you see alot of early-late 90's 28's but not alot in the 1980's range? hmm...

Water heater Bust say no to Salt

I looked at this boat myself in march 2002 ,no good Hampton Marine would not even put it in for sea trial with 2 week notice Hampton Marine is run by a bunch of kids would not even call owner to neg. i would be pissed of if i was the owner he doesent know this is going on! If you are a serious buyer i will sell mine 28 twin 468ci TRS Bristol condition 80mph 31,000 with trailer fresh water only. P>S water heater had TRS with velvet drive trans not Bravo 1 prop was Bravo 4 blade only;)

PANTERA LOVER 07-13-2002 03:27 PM

Bearpaw,
Everything you just said is 100% accurate. This is the same experience i had. I wasted 600$ for the survey, boat wasnt ready for sea trial, broker wasnt even there. They had no idea that the boat was even being surveyed when i practically called once a day to remind them. I had 1000$ deposit down on it and they couldnt care less. That place seriousley sucks!! Guess they didnt want to make a sale. Oh well.

PANTERA LOVER 07-13-2002 04:09 PM

He gave me this whole song and dance on the phone about how great it is and just that the upholstrey was "outdated". boy am i glad i have the 24' i have now and not that piece of garbage. Those people have no business selling boats. By the way i like the color on your Pantera, that blue is real sweet.

sounds good. I fired up mine today and pissed off everyone at the marina! Arent hi-perf boats great!?!?!!!

Stormrider 07-13-2002 10:21 PM

Yeah, Hampton is a stereotypical NY Boston Whaler dealer.
They don't know much about boats, just care to sell'em.

Bear Paw,
Coming from a family of boaters, I will absolutely be getting a boat, just not soon enough. Got a very young family and funds are on the tight side, so I may have to wait a little longer.
All the boats I grew up with were fishing boats, not performance(except for maybe the 1976 38' Magnum Flybridge), but I will be a performance boat owner when the time comes.
I am glad to have found this forum and I'm sure I will learn alot from it. I also like the passion the Pantera owners have for their machinery, there must be something more to THESE boats than most of the competition. I still have not seen a new one in person. The pictures on the Pantera website are great and I'm sure they do justice to the real thing.
Is there somewhere I can see a pic of your boat, and what year is it? Just trying to get an education about the Panteras.

PANTERA LOVER 07-14-2002 10:43 AM

Missingout,
There are much more to these boats. There is just something about it.....! If you want any help with pictures ( i have some of mine and some other ones) let me know! Bearpaw has a gorgeous pantera. If you need any other help let me know.

DLG 07-16-2002 04:21 PM

Try the Pantera Boats site, Owners Forum for
pictures. Welcome aboard!! ;)

dangerkitty2 07-25-2002 02:27 PM

Well I guess you did that. We just had ours
in MD for 3 weeks. Nothing like fresh water
on the north end of the Chesapeake Bay.
Went all over Northeast R, Sasafrass R,
Elk R, Canal Days on the C & D. We usually
get the looks

Indy 07-29-2002 10:14 PM

missingout...28' is a good size for the Sound. Bigger is always better, but for the most part, my 28' does great. Although a NE blow can make things real interesting :p When you get a boat, let me know and we can blast around if you boat in the lower Sound.

Stormrider 09-09-2002 01:12 PM

Water Heater is in the Classifieds!
With a price increase no less...

PANTERA LOVER 09-09-2002 03:09 PM

you must be kidding me!!!!!! that guys got alotta nerve let me tell you..

Caincando1 09-16-2002 03:05 PM

Yes but did you notice that its listed from TNT marine. They claim everything to be rebuilt. TNT has a hell of a good reputaion. I wonder what the story is on it now????

Brian

PANTERA LOVER 09-16-2002 03:24 PM

ya i noticed that also, but when i had the boat surveyed it was not structurely sound. The boat was falling apart, forgetabout the engines and drives. That wasnt the main problem. The inspector believed that the boat may have been sunk at one time. Unless they redid the boat top to bottom i dont know what to tell you. TNT has a great rep, but it seems a little odd that they are offering it for around the same price for all that work??

Caincando1 09-17-2002 07:10 AM

Makes a guy wonder if TNT new what they where getting into.
