Finally started working on my 24.

Only had my boat for a few months and blew up the engine. To busy to work on it most of the year, finally have a little time so I'm going to hit it hard all month and see what I can accomplish. I'll post up some updates as I go. Has been in my dirty dusty storage for months so first we clean it up quick.

Starting to tear it down.

Big holes.

Fuel system is out, it's getting replaced.

Wiring is suspect so I'll be making some decisions as to where that goes. I also went and bought some Bilgekote today so once I get the wiring out, painting begins.

JAIME 12-08-2013 11:45 PM

cool, it will be fun to follow in the Pantera threads again. What year?

Nmbr1GMfan 12-09-2013 07:24 AM

1978 24' Not entirely sure what the engine was but looked to be a .030 over 330 with rectangle heads, small cam, q-jet, cast crank and rods, hyperutectic pistons, SM exhaust. I was told the engine wasn't worth putting the $$$ into so Im addressing that now too. Should have an engine done somewhere between end of month begining of Jan.

Nmbr1GMfan 12-09-2013 02:51 PM

Started cleaning for paint, got the inner ring cleaned up.

Engine mounts cleaned up and found some cracks.

Nice!! I love build threads! Keep up the great work!!

Sick Stinger 12-09-2013 05:09 PM

What type of power are you looking to run?

Nmbr1GMfan 12-09-2013 07:03 PM

Ron Potter is taking care of that. I'll update on that when I get more of the specifics. Should be done with it this month, Jan latest.

Nmbr1GMfan 12-11-2013 09:31 PM

Wiring is gone and a little de-grease / pressure wash.

It was a long day at work... BUT, I did get the rest of the transom fittings out, the hydraulic steering lines plugged with AN plugs and the fuel tank outlet fitting capped off. Then the fun began, soda blasting the bilge.

Doing work this weekend. Will update tonight but here is the rotten pad for the bilge pump.
http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...psc20d611c.jpg

Nmbr1GMfan 12-15-2013 08:12 PM

The alternator kinda gouged the stringer so I ground it out a bit prior to a fix.
http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...psatmvee0d.jpg
As you can see (circles), over the years the bilge had lots of holes drilled for wire looms and what not. Most were unnecessary so I drilled them large prior to filling.

Thanks, been a ton of work over the last few weeks. This week I'm going to sodablast the gimble and drive pieces, get primer and paint for them. And powdercoat misc. engine brackets.

Nmbr1GMfan 12-16-2013 07:22 PM

Not much going on today, I did powdercoat samples tonight so tomorrow I will get paint matched for the gimble and drive parts. Tomorrow night I will powdercoat my intake and some brackets as the engine builder will need them Wednesday morning.

Okay, started powder coating tonight. I'm doing gloss black, matte red and matte silver.

Thanks, dropping the intake and brackets to the engine builder this morning. Gotta get the rest of the drive bits cleaned this week and ready for paint. Christmas is going to hit the brakes on this project for a few days very shortly.

Nmbr1GMfan 12-18-2013 07:12 PM

Didn't get jack done today! BUT... I did get to see the engine in a nearly completed state. I'll post some pics maybe as soon as the weekend when I pick it up.

Warmed over 330/454, mainly built for strength, steel crank h-beam rods, roller cam, intake and carb. I'm super happy with the whole engine deal, seamless and I feel I got more than I asked for.

Working has slowed during the holidays but this did show up.

I agree, if you have it torn down this much you may want to check it out real good considering the age. It would be a shame to go through all of this work to clean it and put it back together if the foundation isn't strong to begin with.

bigboat28 01-29-2014 09:59 AM

Have you got anymore work done?

AnurajShah 04-10-2014 08:21 PM

any progress?

Had it checked with a moisture meter and was told it was damp but not enough to redo it, especially since everything was being sealed up tight.

I do have some more done, no picture as of yet. painting the trans. and complete drive. Waiting to get the boat in to get wet sanded, buffed then the plastic white rubrail looks terrible IMO so it's getting replaced with a more original stainless rail. should have that in getting done in a couple weeks. Unfortunately I only have time to work on projects from November-January and I just didn't get it completed in time, so it's slow going. I also know there are tons of other little things I could do to this thing, I mean its an old boat. I'm just not going to put 50k into a boat that will never be worth 20k, so Im going to fix the squirrels nest of wiring, fix the engine, the unsafe fuel system and tidy up things so we can have some fun. I'll post pictures as soon as I have some significant progress.

I would seriously consider addressing the transom NOW.

Sealing up a wet transom is a bad idea.

I had someone look at it that knows this stuff better than I do. He would have gotten the job so he had nothing to gain by telling me not to do it. He said it wasn't wet enough to touch and he looked at the gimble studs and said if it were wet the studs would be corroded and they aren't. I do however appreciate everyone's input since I really don't have extensive knowledge concerning the marine environment.

Nmbr1GMfan 05-10-2014 06:35 PM

As promised here are a few pics from today. Got it jacked up and got under the floor as best as I could and flushed out the hull, at first I figured I was washing out excess soda from blasting the bilge. Actually what I found was a bunch of sand.
http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...psf34fb277.jpg
Next I pulled the carpet up and pulled the windshield off. As you can see from previous pics the windshield had been painted white, Im going to try to strip it and polish it back to original.
http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...ps6zgz8vq2.jpg

Nmbr1GMfan 05-10-2014 06:40 PM

I pressure washed the carpet, you should have seen the dirt wash out of it, ewwww. I stuck it over a rack and placed it in the oven still warm from yesterday for drying. If its relatively ok I'll put it back in, I think its the original carpet.
