What would be the best class to race a 24' Pantera

It's funny after searching for a nice 28 i have been thinking of getting a project boat as well. I would like to build one with the intention of racing and poker run. What I envision is some thing like the previous race hulls (No Limit and Plum Loco), A 24 sport with 3 man bolster or 2 man, maybe even 4 man bolster like the six pack but just 4 a quad pack lol, put a short (about half size engine hatch) with a 24" standoff box and twin 200 power or even thinking twin Merc 250 efi 3.0L engines. Engine package wise would want something that is reliable and not have to rebuild every 100-300 hours.

Thoughts, Opinions, lets discuss, Kinda bored here at home while its -6 degrees out side dreaming of summer,LOL

I wish there was some kind of "sportsman" type amateur racing I could participate in with mine.

Class six would probably be the class.
What happened to the black one that someone was finishing as a race boat and never did finish it.

Combat zone, formerly no limits, now somewhere in jersey. Make it a sit down boat. No way to make those a comfortable stand up and look good. He'll sitting comfortably I still felt high up in that boat!

Yeah I just read that thread. its a nice boat a lot of time and $$$ to bring it back, hopefully the new owners are members here. That would be a cool boat. Any one run out boards any more in racing?

Unlimited jd 02-14-2015 02:43 PM

It doesn't need much $$ now. We spent a ton of time and money on it.

Class 6 i thought was a single engine class. 7 is a single outboard class i think 23 and under. With twin engines i think you just outclassed yourself. Hafta wee wee with the big dogs...

Yeah looks like (OPA) class 4 is the when twin engine starts, class 500 is single up to 30', and class 6 is 26' single. How much of an HP out board would it take to get to a max speed of 70-75?

Unlimited jd 02-14-2015 07:27 PM

Seven marine 557 lol

mbobb 02-14-2015 08:19 PM

Sounds like a cool project. You may want to ask around about Panteras with twins, I do remember reading on the Superboat page that 24's with twin outboards were a handful to drive due to the center of gravity or something like that

Pretty sure 2o.b. boats have raced class5.
best thing to do would be contacting smitty @ opa if your seriously considering. He may flex the rules depending on his mood.....wasn't the freeze frame tempest 2o.b. a class 5er?

Twin o.b. 24s aren't known to have the best qualities.
Rick is selling his purple s.o.b. think you csm find it listed on s/f 20'+ hulls section, or miami cl
Low 60 mph w 3 liter. Not exactly race ready.

there's a real nice Carrera up here. "Pinball" owns it. It would be a great race boat but not sure if you only want green eyes...
it's I.o.

good luck

Would you be able to run a ballast tank in the front to try and help the balance.

You could,........You could also put a horseshoe under the dash too but.......
I think there's a reason why there's not a lot of 2o.b 24 s of any brand, and why they aren't highly sought after.
I've never heard one good thing.
That purple sob is currently on cl miami as well as a clean tempest 2o.b

There was the 24 with twin 225 ProMax OB's and a 6 man standup layout got the snot beat out of it by a few owners and was sold out of Michigan about three years ago and ended up in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico I think. It had a forward ballast tank too. I gave it serious consideration but it was ragged out and PPI estimated 5-8K to redo the cockpit. There is a really nice 24 SE with twin OB in Canada but not for sale. According to Jo any twin setup requires the ballast tank.

JAIME 02-15-2015 04:38 PM

on river daves theres a guy named jeffrymurrey1957 that says he used to race a late 70's 24 with twins in APBA. Scarab63 what purple boat are you talking about, PlumLoco? I looked and didnt see anything.

scarab63 02-15-2015 06:13 PM

my 24 carrera with 500 hp and bravoo is very well balanced. putting outbards on these boats is a waist of time.

I might just have what you are looking for. I am the current owner of Plum Loco and have just finished a complete restoration. I am contemplating putting it on the market for sale. Everything but the drive is new. I am out of town and will get some pics uploaded when I return.

Hello Scott , I last saw the Plum Loco boat in July 2009 when I dropped in the Pantera factory . It was a mess . Can you start a tread and update us on it's restoration and post some pic's . It has a lot of history and has been talked about several times on here . Surely with Pantera's current business state you had to find a shop to do the restoration .

JAIME 05-30-2015 01:47 AM

cool, cant wait to hear more about it. Love watching the youtube video on Plum Loco. I think its the fastest a 24 Pantera has run.

PlumLoco24 06-06-2015 09:30 PM

Joe, I just started a thread with some restoration info and pics. I actually did all of the restoration myself for the exception of the glass work that was done by Pantera.
