Found my boat

After owning three Donzis and three SeaRays I have finally found a keeper. Nothing negative about the old boats but the 2002 28 Pantera is unbelievable. I had seen several at at distance over the years but learned a great deal about these boats on OSO.
I have spoken to Jo at Pantera atleast 6 times over the past year and Pepe twice.
Each time talking about both new and some used boats that they were not selling themselves. I cannot imagine any other manufacturer being so helpful. All the praise that Pantera receives is well deserved. The product speaks for itself.
Nothing else I have seen that I could afford has been built like these boats.
Can't wait to get it into some rough water. Also had to drive 4500 miles to bring it home over four days. Well worth it!
I guess I'll be needing a new user name now.
Also: Too Old - Thanks for your help in my selection.
Greg

Welcome to the Pantera Family!

Nice choice

Von Bongo 07-11-2003 07:59 AM

The only thing better would have been a 2003 :D, but you made a great choice! The pantera support is outstanding and the boat will not disapoint!

Wildthing, I decided to break in the motor myself rather than possibly have it run hard on the dyno. Most people I talked to said they were not really familiar with breaking in a motor on the dyno.
I'll bet your dying to get down to Miami to get yours! Congrats!

Congratulations...and welcome

Out There 07-12-2003 06:00 AM

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I am
very excited about the boat . I'll post some pictures and performance numbers soon.
Wildthing- The outdrive is atleast a 2002 with an "om"serial #. There is not a mark on it anywhere and I believe it is an 2003.

bigboatsrule 07-12-2003 09:48 PM

Congrats....im still looking in the window, but will pull the trigger as soon as possible !!! they are a great looking boat too!

Well, nothing to post yet. It was Disney this weekend and last weekend getting my Sea Ray Sundancer ready to sell. The Sea Ray is on the lift I want to put the Pantera on. This next weekend I will get it in but may not hit 10 hours- break in. I'll have to take it easy. :(
It is spotless though and ready to go!

JAIME STAR 07-27-2003 09:11 PM

congratulations Donzizx

Which Pantera did you buy, is there a picture of it somewhere on OSO?

JAIME STAR 07-29-2003 06:36 PM

Thanks, for all the great pictures, Pantera makes a beautiful boat, and I like the big eyes look. Its kind of hypnotizing, "Come buy a Pantera."

Von Bongo 08-22-2003 07:01 AM

I think it is still waiting on a motor based on what I read on another thread, at least that is my guess.

Out There 08-22-2003 04:49 PM

Hey guys,
No good news to report here yet. Put on a 28 Four blade and 4000 rpms with a full tank . Running very rich also.
Boat is awsome to drive though. I love it.
Unbelieveable how well it cuts through rough water compared to my last Donzi
28ZX with twins.
Problem is the boat has not been fine tuned.(hopefully) I wasted alot of time thinking it would be fine while I waited on my prop and did some other things.
There are not many people around here that I am comfortable with to work on it.
They should be on it next week. I have been looking at some other engine options if this engine does not put out 550 to 575hp.
Von, how much rpm & speed difference did labbing your 28 make?
I'll keep you posted,
Greg

IRONMAN 08-23-2003 07:51 PM

What carb and jetting? Oh by the way that is a great boat does it have the notched transom?

Out There 08-23-2003 09:20 PM

Ironman, Holley 850 with primarys 2 jet sizes over and 4 jet sizes over on secondaries according to the builder. It does not have a notched transom. Fair amount of soot on the transom after running several hours.

Greg

IRONMAN 08-24-2003 09:46 PM

I am not sure what the carb comes with initially but I have had good luck with 80's in the primary and 85's in the secondary with a power valve or 92's without. That is in a 509" hyd roller engine. Did you sea trial before you bought it, how did it run then?
Oh did I say that is a great looking boat.:)

Out There 08-25-2003 06:48 AM

Ironman & 105,
Thanks for the help. I'll have to look at Holley's web site & find out what jets are standard. I have been in contact with Josh, the engine builder and the boat rigger. The motor in the boat is a good engine it just may not be putting out more than 500hp. Will find out alot more this week.
I'll keep you posted, Greg

MIAMIBOYZ 09-01-2003 11:39 PM

GREAT LOOKING BOAT,YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THAT DONZIZX MEMBER NAME HAHA.

IN RESPECT TO YOUR MOTOR UNLESS YOU RUN IT ON A DYNO YOU WILL NEVER KNOW YOUR TRUE POWER,I`M SORRY TO SAY BUT WITHOUT THAT THE GUESING GAME WILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY AND A BANK OF MONEY BEHIND IT.

WHAT WAS YOUR WOT RPMS AND TRIM POSITION ON THE DRIVE AND TABES.

GIVE ME IF YOU HAVE YOUR ENGINE COMBO,CAM,PISTONS,INTAKE,VALVE TRAIN
STROKE,EXHAUST,IGNITION TIMMING.

THE CARB YOU HAVE COME WITH 73 OR 75 JETS OUT OF THE BOX,I LIKE TO PUT 75 PRIMARIES AND 92 ON THE SECONDARIES BUT EACH SET UP IS DIFFRENT THAT IS WHY THE DYNO IS SO IMPORTANT IN GETTING THE BUGS OUT.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR BOAT AND DONT LET TO MANY HANDS TOUCH IT.

IF YOU WANT TO SEL YOUR 28 LABBED PROP LET ME KNOW I`M WILLING TO BUY IT FROM YOU.

REGARDS ALBERT

baja_daddy 09-02-2003 02:16 AM

Is it just the altitude change that is affecting the carbs?

Out There 09-02-2003 03:15 PM

Hey Guys,
I checked the number at Holley today it is an 830 CFM Standard jets are 85s primarys and secondary. 6.5 power valve. Wildthing, what you listed is correct as I understand it. The cam has the same specs as a HP500 cam. The builder told me he rejetted at 2 sizes over on primaries and 4 on secondaries. I will have the actual jet sizes shortly from my mechanic. I don't have the specs on the cam. The boat does run rich (transom soot & plugs). My mechanic suggests going back to stock jets and setting advance at 28 degrees to make the engine last. Any ideas? I'll be picking up jets in the morning.
I think this motor is well built but most likely is producing around 500hp.
Thanks again for the help, Greg

Out There 09-02-2003 03:28 PM

Update:
90s in primary and 94s in secondary currentlly. 6.5 power valves.

Out There 09-02-2003 03:44 PM

Another update: I found this in some paperwork- Lunati 502/502 cam.

Out There 09-09-2003 05:10 PM

Three new mechanics working on my boat now. Me, myself and I......
My local mechanic is great on stock equipment but insisted that my advance should be no higher than 28 degrees?
Other issues upset me as well. My compression check also came up with very different numbers. OSO has been
an huge help for me.

I am getting a good timing light this week and will go to work. I am not certain about changing the jets but it can't be that difficult. Will also check vacuum and to see if my 6.5 power valves are correct.
Thanks again for all the help,
Greg
