Question Fuel pick up....in tank??? Twin engine 28

Mainly for Jo/Pepe, but I'd like anyone's experience to pay off here..
-Both engines were hard to start.
-Changed fuel filters. They had collected alot of water/rust/etc.
-Engines started right up..

-Ran for 1 hour from Haulover to Sundays on Key Biscayne. Ate lunch. Port engine would not light. Starboard took three attempts but did start.
-Idled out on one engine.
-Headed north.
-Port engine started after about 1/2 hour...
-Got home. Starboard engine ran on the flusher. Port engine only ran for 2 minutes.

I have not taken the fitlers back off...but to block up in 1 hour is quite unusual.
I'm thinking I have "stuff" in the tank that is getting on the fuel pickups and clogging them. The rocking/rolling as we were idling on one engine may have cleaned the port pickup enough to get it going...

Are the fuel pickups under the cap that is on the floor under the back seat? Can the pickups be cleaned out effectively, or do I need to replace them?
I've obviously never taken them apart before. Am I opening a can of worms???
What seals the cap/access on the tank when I reassemble?
I'm hoping to get this squared away by next weekend's Miami SBI race... I'm scheduled as a turn boat...

Tim,

Im not sure about your boat, but my pick ups appear to be welded to the tank and cannot be removed. They are about 1/2" off the floor of the tank.

the pickups are located under the bench seat. If you remove the fuel level sender assembly, you can look into the tank with a flash light and view the pick ups.

Hows your fuel pressure? Are you running electric or mechanical pumps? If electric, you may have some debris in the screens. maybe you have restrictions somewhere else in the lines.

Bruce,
I just spoke to Jo and Pepe...

Yeah, I'm going to check the filters again, than look at the screens on the pumps.

The engines are 502MPis... Small electric pumps mounted on the lower left of the engine..where only a small Oriental guy could possibly reach. But I'm thinking those screens are blocked as well, so I don't have much of a choice but to get down in there....

I don't have pressure gauges... It would be nice to have them...

I'll pull the gauge out of the tank and have a look...while breathing very deeply and smoking a cigarette...

Coming down for SBI Miami?
