overheating?
After waiting 7 months to take my 2001, 24 Pantera (496 HO MAG) out, I finally did today. I went approximately 1/2 mile and noticed a smell a rubber burning . I opened my engine hatch and notice a minor water spray and exhaust blowing out of a 2" hole in the 4" diameter rubber exhaust hose that leads from my exhaust manifold to the through-hull exhaust. I checked my guages prior to this, and noticed that my temp. gauge was reading about 165-170. Is this normal operating temp? I also checked at start up to make sure that water was blowing out the exhaust and also after I discovered the hole in exhaust. Should these 4" rubber exhaust hoses be changed often? Thanks Jeff

Re: overheating?
No they shouldn't. Also that is a tell tale sign that you weren't flowing water.
Were you seeing water through the exhaust after this happened? 165-170 after 1/2 mile seems on the high side. Perhaps something clogged the water pick up. Happens here all the time due to sea weed. I usually see the temps start heading up so I stop go in reverse a few feet and then see the needle drop down. I would do a thorough check and see what the problem is. At 170 you should be fine as far as not hurting the engine. |

Re: overheating?
Wildthing,
Dropped the boat off at marina and their first impulse is to check the impeller. I will keep you posted. Thanks Jeff |

The 496HO has a safety defense system built into it. If it gets too hot it goes into a safe mode and won't run very well until it is cooled back down. These are closed - cooling and do run 160+. I think the T-Stats are 160. |
