7.4L MPI in the 24??

I found a lower time (120 hours) 2002 7.4 MPI motor I'm looking at to possibly install in the 24 to try and sell it w/power.

I know its not a HP motor, but it is turnkey, reliable and should still get the boat moving.

Any ideas of what speeds?

What do you guys thing of this motor in a 24?

A freind of mine ran 59 with the same engine in a 24 Outlaw. You should do better I would think. Ran everytime, just add gas.

I race(d) with and maintain Scott B's '00 24SE (GiGi Motorsports), the boat came from the factory with a 7.4MPI. The boat did a realistic 65mph on GPS with two guys and half fuel running realistic trim. Obviously if you run the boat with a lot of trim, running way loose and with less fuel and one guy you'll see a couple more mph!! Hope this helps!?! Jason

what is the hp on that motor?

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

I have since gone Bigger :D but the boat was competative in P5 and we never turned a wrench.

PS If I could find another one cheap, I would buy it for a pleasure motor and use it in the offseason. Reliable, economic, and 65 in a 24 is still fun.
I actually did buy one for a pleasure motor but Dad blew up his and I gave it to him

59 gps with one in a 26 Corsa and 70.4 gps with a 496HO on smooth as glass water.

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

1989 24' Pantera ran 63mph with a stock 305HP/7.4Carb. spinning a 23p Mirage+.
1997 24' Superboat ran 66mph with a stock 310HP/7.4MPI spinning a 25p Mirage+
Superboat now cracks 70mph with a modified 7.4MPI...
Great low end torque engine.
I too would be interested in a spare.
Hey ScottB, I'm using your old ECU on my 7.4MPI mod.

Pat what mods did you do to the 7.4 to pick up that speed?

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

I believe the 7.4 MPI is around 310 HP stock. But there are several mods that can be done to get it around 330 HP. I'm interested in what Pat did.

I also have a 1999 carbed 454 Mag with less than 200 hours available. It has around 365 HP.

Which would you prefer if you were buying the boat? Lower hours or more HP??

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

What year is your boat?
I would not suggest installing an engine that is older than the boat.

For the same $$ or even a few more $$ a gen VI 454 mag is definitely the way to go. I know someone that dyno'd a gen VI 454 mag carb, 420HP @ 5000rpm. 200 hours is not a lot if the engine has been maintained properly.

I bought my 1999 310HP/7.4MPI with 37 hours for $3200. I would have payed an extra $2000 for a 454 mag if I was not a 2 boat owner at the time.

Upgrade on the exhaust and ECU would be worth about 20HP on a 7.4MPI.

As for my mods to the 7.4MPI, I changed the cam, had some head work done including springs to match the cam, swapped the cast exhaust for stainless marine, and re-calibrated the ECU. Gained 300-350rpm and 3-4mph. I would guess a 45-50HP increase. Still does not have the top end horsepower of a 454 mag, but I would bet it has a lot more low end torque.

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

So you would go with the Mag with the higher time?

The 7.4 is a 2002, the Mag is a 1999 which matches the boat year.

The motor is in the classifieds, the guy seems like a fanatic. Which is good.

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

For the same money or +$500, I would buy the 454mag.
The difference between 120hours and 200hours does not seem that significant to me being that the engines are stock packages.
In my opinion the 454mag is a better match for the way you have rigged your boat; full hydraulic steering, K-planes...
With the 454mag the boat will top out 6-8mph faster than with a 310HP/7.4, and crack 70 without question.
Good Luck Selling Her, She is an Awesome Looking Boat!

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

I'll give it 2 weeks without power, then install a good motor...Mag probably.

Thanks,

Kirk

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

Found a 2001 7.4 MPI with less than 30 hours. Now its between the low time 7.4 and the 195 hour 454 Mag.

Which would you install.

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

I'd go with the mag, the hours are nothing, it matches the yr and the overall intent of the boat. Someone could add a whipple and have a screamer if they chose to.

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

I'd go Mag

Put Bodyshot's 600hp in it!

Re: 7.4L MPI in the 24??

That boat will be easier to sell with a MAG. As a consumer looking to own one in the future I'd have a hard time buying onw with a MPI.
