FIX TRS or switch to BRAVO on my 24
On the second day of my vacation the drive yoke broke causing damage to other stuff like the transom assy, ujoints, and drive. Should I fix the TRS system or change over to a BRAVO type drive. Will a bravo hold up well in a 24 with 500 - 600 or more HP if I am careful with it? Thanks, Chris

Check out Konrad.

XR drive will hold as long as you keep the prop in the water.

Thanks, guys I have looked at Konrad but they are very pricey and I would have to keep the transmission that has many hours on it. I also think that resale may be better with a BRAVO.

Hi Chris,
An XR Bravo 1 will work fine with 500-600 HP in your 24'. Actually a stock Bravo 1 will hold up in a 24' with 500 HP in normal boating use. If you need advice on the drive height give me a call. Regards, JO |
Re: FIX TRS or switch to BRAVO on my 24
Could I use the standard transom assembly or do I need the HD one?

Re: FIX TRS or switch to BRAVO on my 24
To go to the XR drive you will need the HD transom plate.

Put in a Konrad and treat it like an anvil. I can't believe converting to a Bravo costs more than to a Konrad and three years down the line you'll be glad you did.

Re: FIX TRS or switch to BRAVO on my 24
So how much to convert to a Bravo, all labor included?? And how many drives will you buy in the next three hundred hours???
To convert to a konrad with full transom assy, the cost is $10995 for the drive $399 for a steering plate $10 for the trim indicator clamps because the cylinders are bigger. One day of wrenching, no transom modification, no moving the engine or transmission. all comes in one box, with an installation manual. same gear ratio, same prop unless you have a solid hub because the prop shaft is 1.25" run a 1.68" higher x and get speeds that are much closer to the bravo than the TRS. in most TRS conversions, we see +3-7 mph just by bolting the 540 Konrad on. if you want a nose cone, add 600. most important though is less down time and less replacement costs in the future. two sizes up in u-joints, no cone clutch and the bearing problems associated with that design. it's been proven time and time again for the past 8 years. after three years you will be far ahead by going with konrad. |
Re: FIX TRS or switch to BRAVO on my 24
Will the Konrad work with a merc II transmission with the internal spline yoke? Is the internal spline yoke more beefy than the stock merc one? The TRS was great until the driveshaft yoke broke, I am sure that the drive internals are fine I am worried about the longevity of the merc II tranny that has a few thousand hours on it. When it went the drag of the water actually twisted the propshaft clockwise about 20 degrees from the abrupt stop ( right hand prop). If I had a velvet drive I would be much more interested in the Konrad but I have little confidence in the old tranny at this point.
