I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
The stainless marine cleats on my 28 drive me nuts- I know it's a personal thing.....
The good news is I won't ever stub my toe on them but I find them to be a nuisance to tie off with and hang fenders on. I'd really like to replace them with a nice pop cleat, at least the 4 main ones. Anyone know of a unit that will fill the cavity nicely, even if I have to enlarge it a bit? |
Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
I went/am going with to the larger recessed SM cleats with the "normal" small cleat in the middle. I put one on the bow last year and it works much better. I'm putting them on the back corners as well. I would like to do the sides, but getting to the backsides might be tough. Just waiting for them to get back from getting powdercoated to install the back ones. The SM part # for the white ones and polished is reversed on their website. I think I am also going to install some mushroom cleats for fenders.
The old cleats are just too hard to run more than one line through if you are tieing up to others and throwing an anchor. Also take too long to put on and take off. |
Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
I've considered the pushpin/ball lock type pieces for hanging the fenders- its less obtrusive than the mushrooms and quicker and easier to hang the fenders- just can't bring my self to drill holes and personalize the boat in a way that could hurt resale. Then again- that may be the solution to get the fenders to hang just like you want them and have room on the cleat for tying off.

Kenny,
You can use Mountain climbing style clips on the end of your dock lines and just clip the cleats cross bar.Griff we also install that larger Stainless Marine cleat model on our 36' and on some 28's. Kenny, Your 2 Beanies were sent out Today Next Day air, you will see them tomorrow. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to both of you, JO |
Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
Acorn cleat with bezel will not cover the existing cut out.

I have the push pin type like the race boat. They are great and who cares about the next person. One clip on and in place. Fabulous. Talk to Pepe, he installed mine. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Ron |

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Ron Thanks, are you happy with the location you chose? got any pics? With regard to the beaners- I had tried some and had them routed in such a way that they would not chafe on the cleat or glass- then we had some bigger rollers came thru (Ignorant dudes in a ski boat) and the bener got compromised and did soem gouging etc. I guess that poisoned me on the beaners- and yes, they were better than the key chain type. I guess I could get really stout ones and coat them somehow so there is no rub issue. Jo- thank for the beanies- Branden wanted to buy one last night but I was able to change the subject. He wears his Pantera shirts to school almost every week- you'd think it was the school uniform:) |
Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
I agree I dont like the recessed cleats looking to do something diffrent

Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
There's no doubt the recessed cleats are a pain if the rope is too thick. I carry my own lines so it doesn't bother me. Maybe popups would be a good idea, I don't know. With regards to the push pin type bumper cleat. I have one just forward of the rear cleat on the outside of the gunwhale, about where the backseat ends and the sunpad starts. The other one is about the throttle area on the outside. I use some 1/4 line for my bumpers. The line hangs over and no chafing. Pepe installed them and put them in the right spot.

Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
I have these clips that I use on my dock lines. This year I'll buy a few more to travel with. I use these on my bow and stern eyes. I don't want to use them on the cleats because it will rub off the powder coating.
I just put a line on the spring cleat. I tied my fenders onto my grab rails, bow rail, or rail around engine hatch pad. Check out the picture... The clips I have are on the right side. Top knot will splice them on a line for you. These are top quality. http://www.mooringlines.com/images/clips.jpg |
Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
old thread, issue still there, what's being used on the newer rides like Morgan's? Any other newer ideas out there?

Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
What about the pins?
MM has them on his apache. its a recessed hole mounted in the boat. Then the male pin is spliced on the line. oops, just reread this thread... do what ron has. I'm sure MM could answer more questions about this. MM = elindio. |

You're the man!! No sense in taking pics of the pins unless you'd like to see where they are mounted. Let me know. Just a click of the digital. |

I installed the mushroom style spring loaded ones on my boat aft of my intake ducts. They work great for fenders!! I'm going to install 2 more up front just before the windscreen. I don't think they will hurt resale, they are almost not noticable and they do function great!!
Attached is a SS, but mine are white. Until I pull them up people don't even notice them. The pin style are nice too, but then you have that metal piece on the end of a line just waiting to take a chunk of gel out!! |
Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
I've got the same mushroom cleats for fenders on the back corners of my boat also. I was going to put them midship also, but can't get to back side to reinstall the spring and clip after screwing in the base.

Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
Thanks guys, my bud put the pin deals Storm showed on his 42" Tiger a few yrs back and I've seen they work well.
I'm just trying to confirm sweet spots for location on the 28 so any location pics would be awesome. I have not had much boat time due to the rock racing but things are coming around. 540 is getting dialed in- saw 5300 the other day in flat water with the 26" P5x, GPS speedo was out, but I'd think I cracked 80??? Leaving later today for Destin/Navarre beach for 5 days:) |
Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
As i said before Mark uses them on his 41apache for dock lines.
They are great. Hold the boat fine. He doesn't have regular cleats on the boat... at least i dont remember them. Ask Jo/Pepe for good locations to mount these. Best of Luck to you... rob |

ask & you shall receive :D
My mushrooms are mounted a couple inches forward of the rear cleat. The fenders have a loop permanently tied in them and they are looped around the rail. The rail keeps them from sliding back and gets the fender a couple inches higher. I also like the larger cleats a lot better, especially for rafting up. |
Re: I hate to mess with an "original" but.....
Hey Catt, give us lake guys the feed back on the beach scene and how the boat handles. I'm bringing mine down to Amelia island in september. I have a training class for a couple of days. I plan to cut out of class early and go wave blasting every day. :D
