Default Event Review and Final Thank You

Once again, this year Mother Nature reminded us that she is in control by dialing up 15-20 MPH winds from the South on Saturday morning. By departure time it was evident that the Bay would be rather angry with reports of 4-6 foot waves. Fortunately, a couple club members stepped up and organized a group of teams that did not wish to brave the bay and took them up the Patuxent River.
The group that did make the journey across the Bay to Palm Beach Willie’s, in Taylor’s Island enjoyed a poolside barbeque and an Orange Crush bar. There were 17 boats that made it across with 101 people total. Surprisingly the ride back to Solomons was much better and several boats were able to let it fly.
Once we arrived back in Solomons, a group of about 10 boats milled outside of the River waiting for race practice to finish up. The card stop that was originally planned for that location had been cancelled, due to the weather but we went ahead and did it anyway with the handful of boats we had. After that, with the direction of the Coast Guard and Racecom, we were able to go around the outside of the race course at a safe speed and continue on to Vera’s for the finale party.
The finale party at Vera’s was well attended and close to $2000 was raised from donations for charity to help Melissa with her battle. Attendees were treated to great music; give a ways and a bikini contest, not to mention great company. The poker hands were played and Kevin Peregoy from the Southern Maryland Power Boat Club to home the first prize of $750 with a straight, and CBPBA members Gary Miller took second place of $250 and Pat Dolan took third place of $100. Pat happily took the cash and pledged to write a check for double the amount as a donation to Melissa.
In all there were 46 boats and 185+ plus people that attended who event and I am proud to announce that we were able to raise $7,600 that will go directly to Melissa. This event would not have been possible without the support of several generous sponsors and the membership of the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association. The sponsors of the event include Lilly Sport Boats, Vera’s White Sands, Mud Puppy Trappers, The Solomons Yachting Center, Palm Beach Willie’s, GD Marine Performance, The Whiskey Restaurant, WMF Watercraft, Union Auto Glass, Smooth Sailing Sound and Electronics, Accelerated Apparel, Okum Orthodontics, Tommy Manning from T and T Tailgating and Jeff Jennings from Freeze Frame Video.
We would like to thank everyone involved in putting this event together, and the overwhelming attendance from the poker run teams. There is a lot of work that goes into putting on an event like this and we were faced with several obstacles along the way. At the end of the day, it is all worth it when you see what has been raised to help someone in need.
