I've done Boyne twice and the Support Our Troop PR (as well as a couple other PRs in the Ozarks), and they are both GREAT events.
LOTO is performance-boat heaven...even on a non-PR weekend. Eye candy everywhere. The Shootout is pretty much insanity. You'd be fine in a PR event there in a 30 cat, as the runs are on Friday and the lake isn't too busy, but, as stated, post-race, that lake can get ugly. Just leave a little early and you'd be fine.
Boyne is a unique event in that it is so centrally located and in a smaller community. NEVER have I seen more support from the local community for a boating event. They really make you feel at home and welcome for sure. As for running it in a 30 cat...well...it will be hit and miss. Phragle ran it the past two years in a 22 footer, but the Big Lake was relatively calm. Both years I did Boyne, the water was quite calm. However...if the Lake gets angry...even a 47 Apache won't have a good time. Chance you take, I guess...although you can still have fun on Lake Charlevoix...

Went to both last year, two totally different animals. With that being said you can not beat how friendly the people at Boyne are. I will being at both again next year, but if I had to choose one it would be Boyne.
