The best way is going to be diverting a part of the sound through the Y pipe IF you have one. Those slip ins above won't have that great of sound and will really hurt your performance.

I don't think that it is the filter pad itself...

I don't think that it is the filter pad itself that is restrictive, but its the fittings/threads on the inlet/outlet that are a choke point.

You will definitely be pulling the engine again if you run that cam - hopefully just to change the cam. The original HP500 carb cam was 222/230 with a 110 LSA. That motor had well documented...

My vote is for pulling the motor BUT it could be an age contingent thing. The last time I pulled the exhaust diverters to replace the O-rings it = about 20 motor R&R's in my 30's!
