Keep in mind that your engine is rated at 425hp AT THE PROP. A stock 500efi is rated at 500hp at the crank and 470hp at the prop. The 530hp on the dyno may or may not have been in full marine dress....

I’d stay with the 496 myself unless you want to go big power like a 540 and new drive package, otherwise I don’t think the juice is worth the squeeze. Possibly rebuild the 496 with forged internals...

The visible external welds are normal on satin finish CMI's from what I have owned and seen.
I think CMI smooths them out on the polished versions so they become virtually invisible.
