Post Putting the Weight on after Dyno Results Reviewed

Three race team's engines had been sealed and sent for dyno testing.

King of Shaves, OSG & Wettpunkt.com.

After review of these tests, the minimum weight for these boats have increased.

Personal note:

Outerlimits has been running with the added 500 pounds for the last four races...

Maybe now the playing field is level ?

King of Shaves Total HP= 1320 Min Weight (Post Race) 4620kg

Outerlimits Total HP= 1320 Min Weight (Post Race) 4620kg

OSG Total HP= 1476 Min Weight (Post Race) 5166kg

Wettpunkt.com Total HP= 1876 Min Weight (Post Race) 6566kg

RACE ON !!!

They had an observed 471kw

Mercury documentation states that the Mercury EU662 engine is 494kw therefore requiring an additional 500 pounds to be added.

I guess the real question is, should they go by observed kw or stated kw?

Regardless, the team accepted the challenge and many teams from what I heard had plenty of lead on hand to give them....

There is more to it then power to weight ratio. There is no way to even the field in offshore boats. There are too many variables some of which are immeasurable. The best way to make a good season of it is to have a wide variety of courses.

Default He Ain't Heavy - He's My Fountain!

So despite our Ilmors hitting the exact numbers we had declared at the start of our P1 season on the P1 dyno test, in front of myself, Steve Lydon - P1's Sporting Director - and their TTC consultant, they went away, scratched their heads, acknowledged privately that we were quicker than they'd calculated, and in despair and confusion, have now thrown a load of weight at us. The price you pay for preparation!

What you have to realise is that of all the boats racing in the P1 Evo class, only the Outerlimits and our Fountain are current generation boats. We have chosen Ilmor and Arneson surface drives while Mike Fiore chose the Mercury option. You can't do that in any OSS or SBI class which, with a monobrand engine, makes the temptation to gain that (unfair) advantage easier.

P1 is actually a more open playing field and therefore the gaps in performance between the race boats will be greater as a result.

Both ourselves and Outerlimits are actually running slower at the top end than a current 2007 SuperVee (i.e. Miccosukee)which has less power but also much less weight. In fact the OSG Donzi (a six year old boat now) and the big Buzzi can match us on top speed. Problem is they can't go around the corners nearly as fast. That's where we're both gaining hand over fist over the rest. Our corner speed is so much higher. An American friend of mine, an experienced racer in his own right, says he's never seen anyone run a monohull so fast through the turns like James and Craig.

Paul Fiore and I get on real well over here in Europe. I think we respect each other's competitive ambitions. Until they had their engine shut down in Travemunde, we were looking at having one helluva race with them. Hopefully that can be arranged for Cowes next weekend.

Oh they haven't had their engines sealed ... yet!!!
