Seems strange though that there is no mention anywhere of the Nor-Tech SuperSport boat stuffing and disintegrating. Sadly, not much of a result for the new Pantera either. |
Wow I have not heard about this too....
After the accident seems a bad run for the Nor-Tech boat... But the boat did not start for both the Super Sport races. so this should have happened on Firday. or on the Saturday trials |
I read an interview with the driver and the nose dipped and exploded. Like hitting a wall in 85 Mph. Sounds like a bad design or layup.

I dont think one can argue the design as much.
The Nor-tech was doing well as of Malta race 3. But on round 4 on Shelley Jory website she says that they moved some weight inorder to get some better performance of the boat. On round 4 the boat spun and we saw how that ended. Now as someone is saying the boat stuffed and disintegrated.... Over a certain speed a boat is designed with a certain balance, and may be they played a bit too much with this.... |

Yes I remember the race in Malta in 2008, all Skaters in Evolution where coming to pieces, while the EURO Metamarine, Chaudron, Positglione Al&Al and Outerlimits fared quite well.
Cigarette was also delaminating in the rought sea Tunisia race a month later, but had no problems in Malta. The story in the Dailyecho is a bit sad seeing such a good performing team demoted with the recent incidents... I hope a fast healthy recovery for both physical and mental strenghts.... |

The engine stringer broke on the Skater and Carr cracked a bulkhead on his. The Cig might have been a modification to the bottom that didn't stick. Tedeschi's Formula broke the liner out of it one year in Malta and cracked the hull along the steps. It was repaired by Chaudron and this is probably the start of their relationship. It's rough water and heavy boats. Nigel took a boat that was designed for a pair of 525's and an 8,500 lb min displacement and put 850's and increased the displacement to 13K so it was no suprise the OSS class built boats were not heavy enough for the P1 class. I remember Mike and Jackie's Dragon had some spray rail issues early on in P1 as well. Richard Carr also famously broke a leisure boat and was told he had been driving it "too hard" - the make of that one escapes me I'm afraid.

Southampton Powerboat champion Shelly Jory-Leigh in new accident HAMPSHIRE powerboat champion Shelley Jory-Leigh has miraculously escaped a dramatic accident – the second in just one month. Now the 40-year-old sportswoman’s dream of winning the world title, in which she was ranked second, is shattered. She has even revealed the ordeal could mark the end of her career. “I’m not sure I have even got the confidence to carry on,” she said. Shelley’s boat suddenly dipped into the water at 83 miles per hour causing it to slam to a halt during a race in Sardinia. Shelley and her 53-year-old co-driver Patrick Huybreghts were thrown against the boat so hard their faces felt like they were smashed into a brick wall. Her horrific injuries include a broken nose and two black eyes, but she still managed to radio for help as well as lift Patrick who was slumped unconscious over the dash. It happened while practising for the next leg of the Powerboat GPS World Championship after the pair had plucked up the courage to get back on the water. In the previous race – just three weeks earlier – they escaped from a 90mph spin-out while racing in Malta. Speaking about the latest ordeal at her Southampton home yesterday the only woman pilot in the championship said: “It is unbelievable. I have raced for 15 years and I have had three accidents but two have been in a month. It’s just unheard of. I am devastated.” Her voice shaking, Shelley added: “The front of the boat dipped and just exploded on impact like an aeroplane crashing into the sea. That made us come to a very abrupt stop – a bit like driving a car at 83mph into a brick wall. That is what happened to our faces. “I was shouting at Patrick trying to get a response. It was déjà vu. “There was blood everywhere. I could feel it on my face and taste it in my mouth. “When the safety crews got there, I remember crying a lot, then I remember feeling quite hysterical. “‘I don’t want to do this anymore, I don’t want to do this. I want to go home’ – I kept saying that. “My crash helmet probably broke my nose but if I didn’t have it on, I would be dead.” Patrick is in Italy getting treatment for broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder and chest problems. Shelley is at home and will have surgery on her nose next week. She said she owes her life to her personal trainer James Feilo, of Catalyst Training: “I should be broken. My body is shaken but it is as solid as a rock and it is because of him. He has probably just saved my life.” Doctors said she will not be able to get in a boat for three months but she said her husband Trevor does not want her to powerboat for the rest of the year. The racer has indicated the accident could mean she will never get in a powerboat again. She said: “I never say never but I think it is time now not to push it. “In some ways I am slightly superstitious I have had two near misses and the third might not be so lucky. Thank you Rik. As usual from you very good information.
I started following P1 very enthusiastically in 2007, so it is always good to hear this reviews. Before 07 I used to look at the website, and read the information. So on so forth Actually the Skater which finished most badly in the Force 6 NW race in Malta in 2008, was the British one. Quite confirming rumours that Rounds 7 and 8 will be back in Malta.... woohooo |

Thats bad news for me,, surely. But I am sure for the championship is better not to repeat a race in the same place :)

They Spirit of Belgium did not race in Bacoli, so I expect that the 2010 season is over.
Hopefully they will return in 2011 with a stronger and faster package. |

Lets not forget that even a closed cockpit is not 100%. Surely safer but if you dont want to get hurt stay on the couach.
When Metamarine spun out in Malta trials they where doing about 95 mph, and both Ferrari and Pennesi had quite serious injuries which took them about a month to recover. I heard the dip in PQ happened about 85mph so there is not much difference. And then in the end sometimes it depends how things happen. The declaration of changing gravity to the Nor-Tech to improve performance was stated by Patrick and can be seen in the video of Malta if I remember well after the Powerpole. In this video he states that the Nor-Tech is fast, and indeed it is having placed two times a second, and once a third place in the the races it finished. But he still wanted that extra 1 or 2 mph in order to be able to win a race. Weight change is always critical and a bit delicated, I know boats which went to lighter newer engines, and the result was not so good. Still I am surprised of the boats destruction! |
No not 100%. American offshore racing lost two racers in a canopy boat two years ago. Then there was the Victory tragedy this year. But after the Unlimited Hydroplane circuit went to mandatory canopies, fatalities dropped 95%. OSS mandated canopy boats from its beginning. I believe OSS has suffered only one fatality since it has been in existence.
