Any word out there on these motors. ( 575sci's) I am lookaing at a boat with a pair of these built in 2001 that have 170 hours. Anything I should be concerned about? Good or bad please fill me in.

I know of two boats with them and them seem very happy with them. I have not heard of any issues. You could pm BILLR he has them in his 38 tg I believe he will let you know of any problems I think his boat is a 01 or 02 also. By the way what are you looking at?

Bill is very happy with his. I'll see him today and tell him to chime in. I have been on his boat....and driven it :D and I don't think they are that much more thirsty than my HO's. But man do they sound GOOD!

Yes they are awesome! Idle like a kitten (cmi headers, very loud)
No load up, very well mannered.
Blowers are weiands so they are fine, no they dont eat XR drives, they are perfectly mated with the xr's
the best is that they are injected not carbed so the computer is always compensating so that no loading will occur.

They do idle a little higher than a normal carb motor, around 800 850 or so but believe me they are just flat out impressive.

They will use about 10% more fuel.
The thing to look for is to make sure the front seals on the blower pulley's are not leaking oil. Early models had issues with bad seals. Check the repair history, it is likely that they have been replaced. Also have compression and leakdown test done. On leakdown, Merc says anything under 30% is ok by thier standards. I would be leary of anything over 15%.

So far they appear to be a rock solid turn key motor. Only extra maintenance is to change blower oil about every 50 - 100 hours. "I" plan to change oil around 25 hours as they do run rich.

Once you run these, you'll be hooked. I was VERY skeptical about blower motors, but since this is a very mild Merc engineered package; I am now comfortable.

Also, Scott Buteyn of Mercury Racing was here checking out Nauti-Props' boat last summer and doing some field testing. I got to spend quite a few hours talking with Scott about the 575 (and others) and any issues that Merc may have experienced with it. Basically it is a VERY sound motor. Scott said that head gaskets should be replaced about every two years and "check" valve springs about 300 - 400 hours.
As far as rebuilding or refreshing them???
Any engine that has been run to death will have to be rebuilt NA or SC'd does not matter.
If your asking like a typical HUGE monster SC engine like a 1600 sterling every 50-100 or so hours NO
575 sci is good easy for however long you want it to last which depends how hard you are on it. You should see 400+ hrs on it if your really thrashing it, or 600-700 if you baby it and take care of it and oil changes constantly, keep an eye on everything all the time and dont run it WOT for 95% of its life.


Go for it, you'll be glad you did.


Also, pull off the thermostat housing and check the small hose passages. If they corrod easily.

From the research I have done, they are built like a brick s**t house. Should last a very long time as long as they are properly maintained.

Mac I am looking at a 2001 Avenger with the 575's and XR drives. Motors have 170 hrs . Do you know how many Bill has in his? Has he done any work in them....valve springs perhaps?

Hope your spring is going well, ours sucks. Rain Rain Rain and cold. Haven't been out yet.

Bill --- Great info, thanks much. I will look into that front blower seal issue. I am going to see the boat tomorrow and hope to run it some. Leak down was just done. All cylinders cane in from 6 to 8 %. Compression on one motor was pretty solid at 120 125, the other was mostly 115 with a couple cylinders in the 125 130 range. I am being told by others not to sweat thew compression because of the leak down #'s. Any thought's

Not sure how many hours Bill's have. I think about the same as the 38 you are looking at. That boat should run real nice with those motors! Keep us posted!!

Our spring weather has been total crap here too. I just passed the 10 hour mark yesterday which is unbelievable for mid May. And it was our first real boating day. This morning is nice, but strong storms are forecasted for the afternoon. SOS!

Mine are the 525sc and I have 220 hours and have had no problems (knock on wood) with the motor , but did just replace a starter and a fly wheel :mad: , but no differerent then any other motor. Bill is correct they sound great with the cmi's and then when you get on it and hear the blower wine that is awsome :evilb: :evilb: . Mine are carbed but injection is very nice option. Good luck with the ride today hopefully everything goes well. Keep us posted.
