Drive Showers
 

I have a question for the group. I have XR drives on my 38' with Livorsi drive showers, but I am still getting the familiar calcium build up at the top of the drives indicating that the drive showers are not doing their job. I have had drive showers on every boat before and never had this problem before. It actually looks like there is not shower at all. What type of showers are all of you running and do you still get the stains with them? I have never had Livorsi before, but with such a big name one would think they would be designed correctly.

I wasn't aware of this, drive showers keep the drive cool while underway I may be wrong, but I don't think they are for keeping the drive clean.

I use the Simrek Halo shower and my drive is as clean as the day I installed it over a year ago.

I had Imco on my last boat, and they worked OK. But I am with K4M, I am having simrek's put on this next boat.

PKSPX, they do keep the drives clean if they are working correctly. Those stains are formed from the re-entry of the hot drive into water when slowing down, virtually boiling the water off them and creating the white build up. If the drives are kept cool enough that won't happen, and the drives will stay very clean.

I have done some more research on the Livorsi site. It seems since I have Livorsi steering the top plate on the drive is needed, so Livorsi drilled a hole in the center of it and ran a braded line from the cavitation plate to the center of this plate. So all this thing is doing is trying to keep the upper bearing cool and it does nothing for the sides fo the drive. The upper plate is too thick to get any advantage off of this. I am going to call Livorsi to see what ideas they might have.

I have Simrek Halos as well and it cured my calcium issues. My drives would look like crap after I would run for any extended period of time before drive showers, now they alwayse look great.

Ok, so if your drive looks like crap with the white Calcium built up on it what is the best way to clean it off. Thanks!

I have been using lime away. It takes it right off with very little scrubbing. I use a sponge and then wash it right off. I use the same thing to clean the stainless exhaust pipes that get stained.

Thanks Tim. I started thinking Lime Away might work. I'll have to try on the tips, I'd been using Simple Green but that took quite a bit of scrubing.

You may want to adjust the water pickup depth a little. I have hydrocools and the pickup depth made a difference in cooling effectiveness judged by the amount of calcium build up.
