Changing Couplers on a 38'

Hey guys, got some weird rubber smells coming from my engine compartment. I took a peak around my couplers and there is a small amound of dust under the couplers. The boat is a 97' 500's all original. Always properly greased and aligned. I am looking for words of encouragment but I'm thinking I will be standing on my head unbolting these PITA offshore mounts and replacing couplers. I was hoping to make it till fall because the 500's are getting bumped up this winter. Oh well, for the love of the sport right:D

Well, after posting in tech, I may have few other things to look at. It has been mentioned that a coupler should not smell. Rather you will notice metal shavings from the splines. Belts seem to be tight, and my engine temps are good, but maybe I have a water restriction into the exhaust causing my hoses to smell. The risers seem to get pretty hot even though my temps are only 150. Does this make any sense?

Normally stainless risers get a little hotter than fact. cast. The other thing is, How many hours do you have on your sea pump impellers? You don't have a closed cooling system do you?
