advice on buying 2000' avenger 38 w/volvo 600hp
 

i am looking at a 2000 avenger 38 that has volvo 600 dpi motors and duo prop drives...apparently does 90 mph.

how does this translate on the market when you have volvo motors ??

mercs 525-575 or even 500hps' are nice and normal to see in a speed boat but volvo motors ??

how hard will it be to unload the boat after i am done with it ?

are many powerquests with these volvo motors ?

are there any fountains or sonics with these volvo motors ?

For people that know what the Volvo's are the motors will be very desirable. Unfortunately not alot of people know what they are. Better built, longer lasting, but not heavily marketed......kinda like computer illiterate people thinking AOL is the best internet provider out there!

sp lets say a 2000 avenger 38 with 525's /bravo1 xr....against a 2000 avenger 38 with these volvo package with dou-prop.....

how much cheaper shall i pay for this volvo package....lets say if a merc package with a trailer is being offered for 90000$... and th evolvo package on the other side with no trailer.. i offered 25k cheaper for the volvo/no trailer package..am i realistic ?

i know when i will want to unload it, i will take a beating with the volvo pack...this guy has it 4 months with a florida broker and has received no offers yet...

Check the boat very carefully, if its the one I think it is it was shipped without power to (at that time Longwood marine) in Longwood Fl. It was the owners personal boat and there was some history as to actual title/ownership of the boat when Travis Boating Center bought them out a couple of months later.The boats been knocking around for sale off and on ever since with brokers every where from Fl. to Texas. I rode in the boat when it was first powered and it would run close to 90 but it had some vibration issues(I think it was where the pipes passed through the hull) but It made to whole boat vibrate/resonate right off an idle up to about 2800 rpms.

If your seeing a 2000 38 with the 525's and a trailor for $90,000 that all ready is a pretty sweet deal, unless it needs motors or has other issues.
Relative to the Volvo power I have no idea if it is better but I do know they don't sale and there were verry few PQ's that had them .
I also question the 90 MPH. My 2001 with 575's is at 84-85. I always heard the dual props are slower than the singles.

Seems like I just looked at a listing in Powerboat regarding a 38 with Volvo duos with 575hp for $85,000. I can tell you I looked at a 27 a few years ago and could have bought the 27 which was newer and less hours for less than I could buy a 26 for.

I really don't think the Volvo is inferior to the Bravo simply a matter of preception. But the reality is the boat with the Bravo will have a much better resale down the road. And lets face it when spending that kind of money on a toy resale is a pretty big part of the purchase.

As for speed I was always under the impression that the duo props were slower top end. The beauty was a better cruise speed (lower speed & still plane). 90mph maybe I'm missing something.

On another note I visited the Regal plant a couple years ago when we thought about a more family friendly boat and I noted the there was a 50/50 mix between Merc & Volvo units.
But than again we're not talking performance boats.

Exactly what I was thinking. the duo props will be slower, are not the right set up on that style boat, and will cost you at resale. The volvo engines are well known by the cruiser crowd at LOTO. Nobody uses them, or duo props on performance boats.

I would also be suspect of the 90 mph, my guess is the speedo might say that but a GPS may not.

Question on the Merc 525s - were they available in 2000? I thought it was still the 500 EFIs that year????:confused:

i apreciate it guys... i passed on the boat for the reasons you have all mentioned....
selling it later is as important as the buying today.. i feel it will stick to me later..

Those Volvo motors were built by Innovation Marine for Volvo. They are rockstar motors. The DPX drives are bulletproof. Formula offered this setup in some of their FasTechs as well. http://www.offshoreonlyclassifieds.com/page-6783.html

If you can buy the boat at a reasonable cost and don't plan on turning it in a short period of time, I wouldn't discount it.
