If not a PQ? Then What?
I've been looking at boats for a next spring Purchase. I am liking the Vyper and Avenger.
But If one was not going to buy a Powerquest. What would be a comparable or slightly better boat. How do Soinc, Sunsation, Velocity, Active Thunder, stack Up? Or is there a mfg I should look at. I am somewhat Familar Formulas (there's a million of em Lake Charlevoix). Fountain and Cigarette might be too much. Personally I don't like the Fountain's nose tip. Things I like on the PQ's are the Cabin's head room, they're somewhat fast, but have week end Creature Comforts. |
Shawn,
As you probably know, we took this PQ in on trade at the AT factory from Macklin on a new 37 Active Thunder. http://www.offshoreonlyclassifieds.c...o16505-en.html Drop me an email tomorrow, so we can trade numbers, and I will give you a run down on how things stack up between this particular PQ, and the entire AT lineup. Active Thunder has AWESOME quaility, I love the layout of the boat and craftsmanship. If your looking for something compareable to the Powerquest boats, I would probably say Baja (pleasure sport boat).

The above thread has some info. I give the stats for my Avenger on page 3 I believe and I just listed it in the classifieds on Tuesday. I am looking to move to a cat, but this boat has been SOLID, not one day of regret. Email me if you have any questions. |
Comparing a baja to a powerquest is like comparing a corvette to a cavalier.
Try taking a cavalier out on a race track and you'll be surprised that even though it looks good, its really a piece of Sh*t! |

Take out a baja in 3 footers and a powerquest and you will know the difference in a heart beat. Powerquest over Baja any day ! Its more like a porsche over a camaro, both fast but the difference is in the ride and engineering no comparison.

PQ vs Others

IF YOU LIKE CABIN COMFORT AND SPEED THERE ARE ONLY TWO BOATS TO CONSIDER IN THE GO FAST FIELD. POWERQUEST AND BLACK THUNDER. Thats it. The Formulas and Fountains are too narrow, the Baha has some room but suffers from quality issues and the ride is nothing compared to the PQ. The Outerlimits Hustler Cig, are fast but have no cabin to speak of. Sunstations are too small except for the F-4 The Eliminator may be a possibility but I don't think they have much of a cabin For the money and ride you can't beat the 38 Avenger.:circle: |
I wasn't going to really say anything on the Baja, but do notice it wasn't in my original list. There is a 38 baja for sale in town and the hump alone doesn't settle well with me. I've been on a 24 or 25 Baja and that 38 and then a two 340 Vypers. I diffinately believe PQ to be a better boat. No offence PKSPX
But what about some of the Others. I never knew there were so many manufactures out until I started hanging out here. Sydwayz - I'll call, I have been going through an audit this week at work so I have been Buried. |
Performancemary - Thanks, I didn't see your post prior to sending my last. That is just the kind of thing I was looking for.
I am assuming the '01 Poker run edition w/ the 575SCi's in the classifieds is yours? Nice Ride either way. |
Shawn, and anyone else for that matter, should jump on my 340. I babied her big time. Stored indoors 24/7. Flushed with Salt Away after every use. Full detailing once a month or more in season. She never gave me a lick of trouble. Loaded with ALL options. And build pics to boot.
I'm telling you guys...someone is going to get one h*ll of a deal for a very sweet boat. My Only Child deserves a new home. :cool-smiley-011: |

Could be the only one with 575's they ever made, at least I haven't seen or heard of any others. If you want to go for comfort, speed and some great looking motors give me a call. Jim |
So I have to ask - If you're selling the best PQ has to offer, then what is your next move? Just newer? or a Cat?
|
Shawn, I made a deal with my wife several years ago that at some point we would move to a cruiser. The 38 is our third PQ go fast so now its time to close the deal. She wants a Fountain Express Crusier, nice boat, decent speed but not a go fast . Believe me I will miss it.
|
Well I am selling mine for the sole reason of moving to a cat. No BS of "I babied her she is the best deal on the planet". My 38' Powerquest was a great boat and is only really 2 years old with now 150 hours. 500 EFI's which are always better than superchargers. Hasn't been in the shop for anything more than an oil change and drive oil change. At LOTO, cats are starting to rule, so I am joining the group, that's all. Let me know if you want more details....

point been ,sonic is a good boat but sonic as a company had their own problems the last couple of years. So if someone buys a PQ they are buying the boat not the company. |
I am not too concerned with the fact the company is strugling. Mostly I guess because I not looking for a new boat at the Max dollar, where you really want/ need the support if Problems arise. warranty etc...
IMO The company brings the hull design and craftmanship to building the hull. For the most part thier job is done. Anything that bolts on to the hull is typically made by someone else anyway. One other thing the company brings to the table is some one to sue when it all blows apart. for the most part that's not me. I really need Mercruiser down the road of ownership. Anything else like Canvas, Vinyl, gauges, controls, planes, hatch lifts, windows, cleates. It's all somebody else. Plus I am looking at relatively Proven Boats 340 & 380 , '01 -'03. It is a good point though, That is something that Formula has over PQ. But there are too many formulas on my lake and they just don't have the room. |

Dyno, it does not matter when you are buying used, you can find what you need anywhere. Shawn. It just depends on what you want out of a boat. I love my 38 for all the room I have, but if I had a place in LOTO I would probably look at a 42 cig, if you want more cuddy a cig is not the way to go. We looked at alot of boats but PQ won for us because we had owned two others and loved them. If you need more room look at a Blackthunder. If you are trying to compare boats well look at them all. Sonic I dont know at all, Sunsation great boats but smaller then I was willing to go until the F-4, Velocity?, Active I hear are great boats, Formula are great boats but I'm not a hug fan of the looks of there powerboats, Fountain no way (IMO), cig's nice but you dont get the room. I have personelly seen cullen's boat it sits at the same condo complex as a buddy of mine and it is nice. I have also seen perfmary's and loved it as well. I own a 99 38 with fresh 525sc's that I also want to sell, and I am looking to buy a place at LOTO and then figure out what to buy. I was going to buy a 400ss Formula but decided to buy a place and stay with a powerboat. If you are interested let me know. Good luck on what ever you do. Rich. |
Shawn,
I agree with most everything said in this thread. What closed the deal for me was the space in the cuddy, the build reputation, the fact there was not any on our lake (Except when Christian visits!), and the drop dead gorgeous looks of the boat. After the fact, the customer service was great (factory was still open at the time) and the boat has held up quite well. Good luck with your search |
