You can change the cable without pullng the engine .... if it's kinked -it's done. The inner core is a solid cable and once bent - it's toast. Changing the cable isn't that bad -

Any idea how the cable goes thru the transon ? I haven't got a problem pulling the drives, it's getting the cable thru the transom and transom assembly that worries me.

Take the cable off the shift plate bracket that goes to the helm (this is located in the engine compartment) now shift it from forward to reverse. Is it an easy soft motion or do you feel friction? BTW Merc offers three cable styles.
1 regular
2 Premium (very nice)
3 Platinum (may be overkill)

Scott can you use a Merc cable on Kekafer shifters? If anyone knows let me know please I need to replace mine this winter.
