270 540 Build

Thinking of upgrading this coming winter and starting to plan things out. Anyone know of any 270's running big power packages?

pkspx 06-19-2008 11:58 AM

no one running big power in a 257, 270, or 280?

Fast Forward 06-19-2008 04:02 PM

There was guy that had a 26 listed with a 540. He stated it handled really well but I'm sure there's a bad walking issue and you have to drive your way through that. Would not be my choice of hulls for big power.

I'm running a 548/650hp in a 280 silencer.80 mph gps What do you need to know? Bob

How well does it handle, whats is your cruise speed like? Right now with my supporting mods my 270 is doing pretty good. I'm interested in getting more power so I can cruise at 60-65mph without needing to romp on the engine.

YEEEAHHH 1000POST!

Bob280Silencer 06-23-2008 12:41 AM

At present I'm running a stock 28 B-1 prop.I like to cruise at 45-50,3700/3800 rpm is about 52 mph(water conditions, etc)After 65 you have to start to pay attention, after 70 you better get ready to drive the boat, after 75 you need to be sober. It can be exciting at 80.At 50 mph,I can play with my lady, drink a beer and listen to tunes. With 650hp and 680 ft lbs of tq at 3900 rpms,I squeeze it on and the gps climbs two to three mph at a time and you're doin 70.I love it.Bob

Nice setup, do you happen to have any pics? Currently I am running a modded 454 pushing 550hp and it's time to upgrade! I'm thinking 588CI hehe

Bob280Silencer 07-01-2008 10:39 PM

The boat originally had a HP500 (blue engine)I sold that, kept all the fuel injection,CMIs and valve covers.I started with everything new(block, crank, etc)So it looks like the original HP.I could have use a larger cam but I was going for torque. It makes more TQ @ 3000 than the HP made. It's a 548.588 sounds good, too. What lower do you have?I started with a XZ.I was worried about breakage so I changed the gears to XR straight cut.So for,so good. Bob

pkspx 07-02-2008 10:34 AM

I'm using an IMCO 2" shorty with the stock merc gears swapped out of my bravo 1. I got roughly about 5mph plus better stability. I HIGHLY suggest looking into your X dimension, raising it is the best thing you can do for the PQs.

Bob280Silencer 07-02-2008 11:56 AM

5 mph!!!! Cool... thanks.Where is your prop shaft in relation to the bottom?

yep, not only on top but all the way around rpms.

verbi69 07-02-2008 08:54 PM

Bob, would a 500 hp fit right in where a 496 was in a 280?/
PKS, you mention PQs like to have a shorter outdrive...how so and what is best??
thanks guys,
Mike

PQ mounts the out drives deeper because it is a pleasure boats and makes it easy to get on plane. Basically what you are doing when you go with a shorty is raise the X dimension, the measurement of where the prop is in reference to the bottom of the hull, the V part. (someone correct me if I'm a little off)

Bob, do you have any performance goodies left over from the powerquest?? Would a good set of tube headers and a re -program be worth the money and effort for the performance that would be gained??

Thanks,
mike

A good pair of CMI headers are the best thing you can bolt onto an engine, getting the exhaust out quicker will make the engine essentially more efficient.

verbi69 07-05-2008 10:50 PM

Thanks PKS....cmi headers would look cool too....Maybe I should hold out for a 500 hp or put in a Raylar kit......dunno!!:cool-smiley-027:

Way nice...you guys are awesome!!!:ernaehrung004:

Bob280Silencer 07-07-2008 05:08 PM

Verbi69,Changing from a 496 to an hp could be a lot of work.I would stick with what I know fits and work with Raylar.I'm sure they can make enough power to get your attention.CMIs look bad and sound great, not to mention they work. They came on my HP500 so I kept 'em for my 548.Bob

Pete280 07-07-2008 10:01 PM

a 270 and 280 have different hulls, not sure why the comparison. The 270 has a low X and the 280 has a much higher X due to the step and the notch. The previous owner added a 1" spacer to mine and picked up a couple mph. I see 69.5 gps all day with a slightly modified 502.

verbi69 07-08-2008 05:09 PM

Thanks Bob...I wont argue with you on that one...it makes way too much sense!! Thanks for the advise....anyone got headers??

Well instead of the build guys I am leaning more for selling the boat and upgrading something with twins. I'm thinking of listing her for roughly 30K. It's a hell of a boat with the built 454. Gellner and I have been talking about possibly still doing a new build using a bowtie block 588CI sounds like tons of fun but thinking its time to move on.

Bob280Silencer 07-11-2008 03:46 PM

588 sounds killer but I've been told once you run a twin boat it's tough to go back to a single.Bob

pkspx!! I noticed that you have done quite a few mods to your 270! I just upgraded from an Viate 208 XL to the 270. My 270 only has an 310hp 454. Need to pump it up. What did you start with & what mods worked best? Ive only been in it twice so i don't have alot of experience with the 270. GOt a steal on it but is slower than expected. HELP?
Thanks.

Great thanks and help from Dean Gellner from Gellner Engineering!

The boat originally came with a 454 MPI EFI engine but I had it torn down and rebuilt from the ground up. It was first converted to carb using a Holley 850CFM carb. Next we changed the heads with dart Pro 1's, a cranes cam with a pretty mild grind from the catalog, roller lifters, crane cams rockers, dart hi riser manifold and blue printed balanced complete. It Definitely woke it up. I can cruise very comfortably running 50mph without beating the snot out of it. My BEST top speed with EXCELLENT conditions and temperatures, were 69.6 mph in the spring.
